Senate Republicans on Monday blocked a bill that would fund the government and suspend the U.S. debt ceiling, leaving Democrats scrambling to avoid a possible economic calamity.
The House-passed legislation would have funded the government into December and suspended the U.S. debt ceiling into December of next year, after the midterm congressional elections.
Lawmakers need to approve government funding before Friday to avoid a shutdown. The U.S. risks default if Congress doesn’t raise the debt ceiling by a point that is likely to come in October, according to the Treasury Department.
After every House Republican opposed the measure, the Senate GOP also refused to help Democrats suspend the debt limit. In a 48-50 vote, all Republican senators opposed advancing the legislation.
Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., voted no as a procedural move so he can bring up the bill again later.

How many times have we seen this?
The spineless Republicans will get their under the table money and give the Democrats everything they want.

What has the government shown us they are capable of doing that should make any sane person fear a government shutdown? My only fear is for them reopening.

This is one of those times where we could really use strong republican senators. If they would stick together then they would be able to stop the crazy spending.

This is the problem with our electoral and economic system. It's very short-sighted because all politicians can think about is who will get the blame in the next election cycle for any sort of economic downturn. Instead, they kick the can of recession down the road through borrowing and printing, which only exacerbates the problem. We're going to have to pay that fiddler eventually and the price is going to be far higher than it should have been. There are always going to be market downturns and recessions. We should just ride them out as they occur.
