I feel like the article is somewhat misleading. Yes, I think it makes a good point that having so many options can result in less commitment. The flip side is that millennial are also having less sex. The hookup culture has actually dwindled, if anything. People are, however, waiting longer to marry or staying single because they can’t find a perfect match in a sea of choices.

I just remember the change in self-esteem in my ex when she discovered bumble. She was like "but I'm just a plain Jane, no one's going to want me". ONE WEEK LATER: "How in the hell do I have 187 potential matches!?"

ETA: 3 weeks later, "eh, I don't know if I really want to date another lawyer, maybe this week I'll accept a date with this guy. He's a doctor."

Hate to break it to you but the hook up culture existed way before the web... The web may have facilitated its expansion but it existed a long time before the web...

The web made it more mainstream and made it more acceptable to society as a whole. We are to the point where not hooking up is seen as abnormal in many respects...

hookup culture has never been bigger than it was in the 60's, there just wasn't an internet that told everyone about it.

"The Proposal" TV show is a good example of the devaluing of the family and commitment.

How many women watch the Bachelorette religiously? The reason that show is popular because it depicts perfectly what type of life many women REALLY want.

They can say its trash all they want, but deep down they yearn for such an existence as what they see in that show.

Whats the attraction otherwise? Should be poisonous garbage.

This. They want to be wanted and courted by a bunch of handsome guys while living in a lavish mansion and taking storybook vacation excursions despite not working any kind of actual job.

Not to the degree we see it now, not even close.

Statistics regarding marriage, divorce, and children born to single mothers suggest hookup culture is the highest its ever been right now.

Getting married and having children was a duty as far back as 30-40 years ago and society was set up to make that available and easily possible. Now theres a great deal of factors that are effecting marriage AND childbearing like we've never seen in American history.

that's b/c of the stratification involved. the top 5-10% can only have so much sex (and they're the ones dominating the scene)

And here we are, she's now evaluating her choices in a completely shallow and vain manner.

She better be careful playing the field too long, otherwise she'll find herself getting replaced by a younger and newer model.

Did you read my post or do you have a problem with comprehension?

My argument was this "mentality" existed way before the web, someone else pointed out the 60's and really that is where the hook up culture really took off... I agree the web has done more to expand it but it was not even close to the creation of it...

Basically this. 70% of women are fat and/or have kids. The top 30% of women are the ones who simply don't have kids and aren't too too fat. They all think they deserve a top 10% man. They shun all other men seeking that top 10% man. Top 50% men think they all deserve a top 30% woman, so they turn down 70% of women who they don't think are worthy of their time. But, the top 10% of men are the only ones getting that 30%, so men in that 11-50% range have to settle for those sub 70 chicks, so women who aren't in the bottom 10% aren't going to settle for a sub 50% man. Those guys get nothing just like the bottom 10% of women who look like mutants.

The top flight women and men dominate the market, the midling women still get all the dick they want, and the non-top shelf guys get stuck with less than appealing options.

Sure, I agree with that sentiment. We are seeing the fruits of what came out of that movement. The people in those movements are most likely the ones who raised the SJWs and 3rd wave feminists of today.

I think she's aware of how much time is on her biological clock. I'm looking for a younger model, but not looking that hard. I've got more important things to focus on fixing in my life post-divorce than getting laid. I have more immediate needs on the Maslow Hierarchy to satisfy before I get back to seeking love/belonging.
