I tell people until Im blue in the face - our alma maters aren't what they were 20+ years ago and the college decision is way more important for our kids than it used to be.
Here's the SEC. Purple isn't safe anymore.
there are plenty of conservative colleges you can send your kids to if youre scared of someone interacting with your child of a different political affiliation than you

There is this “youth culture theory” that describes the rise of youth culture, a situation where youth looks to other youths for their cues. It goes on to describe these cues can only come from one direction, so like a compass, where before youth would get their cues from parents, now oppose their parents in favor of their peers. This is the definition of dysfunction, and started in the 1920s. Children used to grow up in communities settings, where they would be amongst all ages, their friends would be introduced by their parents, kids would want to be like the elders in the community. That’s not the case now, they want to be like oldest kid. I don’t think this is specific to college campuses, once children are adolescent age, parents influence, diminishes, and society/ media rule their world.

The entire educational apparatus is hardly "someone".

It’s not university professors.
It is. For many kids.
Kids are reaching maturity far later than they used to, theyre not adults until age 25 or so now.

If at all.
See: College age kids melting down over "offensive" Halloween costumes. Colleges are suppose to be safe spaces for everyone, where everyone feels welcome*.

The Great Leap Forward
I found several books with this in the title, one on the Great Depression and another on China policies in the 1980-2000. Is there a specific book which covers the topic you are referring g to?

I'll say this about Vandy: yes, it's a leftist campus, but they don't suppress other views. They have (or at least had) one of the more high profile tenured professors who would regularly speak out against Islam and her job was never in question; no pressure, no apologetic statements from the school. My daughter came out intact as did several of her close friends. They don't (unless it's started recently) do cancel culture or shout down opposing viewpoints.

There should have been a huge backlash to this. I’m still trying to wrap my mind around it. Dershowitz said it’s because the Jewish heads of these universities created people like the Harvard president. It’s still amazing. I guess the cause is greater than the symptom.

I think its already happened.
Brought here around 1935 thanks to the naivete of the times, and has been festering and embedding itself deeper into every institution since - just like any malignancy.
Now the ideological deviants they've kept producing for about three generations are in their next phase and getting their second wind.
Lots of enthusiasm and smugness among them.
Deviancy never corrects itself. It wallows in itself.

Our neice recently graduated from LSU and has been totally brainwashed by LSU! Here is why and worse, now LSU professes it so arrogantly as if its their own religion. It is a religion.
It's NOT our values!
do you think your kids will ever encounter any non-republicans in the real working world?

Hard to imagine the real world being that homogeneous. Over 50% of universities had 1 or fewer professors that voted for Trump in 2016.
It's only gotten worse since.

Fewer, once they become more mature.
Strange how that works.

You are basically correct as they can still be indoctrinated. Just don't forget you are still a parent.

There is no bigger hive mind today than Post Secondary Ed.
Academics are normally social utopians, which is ironically stupid.
