I posted this here years ago. The lyrics are not the problem. It's the music. If you never heard our national anthem before and you heard it for the first time today you'd say 'that kinda sucks.'
Musically, the best anthem is Russia. France is a close second. Canada's is downright cringe worthy.

Soviet anthem is great; France is a great sing along anthem.
No crowds sing along to our anthem if they even know the words. They say musically our anthem is the hardest to sing... professional performers struggle to get the pitches right.

National Anthem. We had to fight for our independence and fight to maintain it. Our anthem expresses that.

Sorry, but God Bless America is just better, and I would replace the Star Spangled Banner with it. It’s a memorable tune where people get the gist of it whether they speak English or not. You’d have no idea what they were talking about if you just listened to the tune of the Star Spangled Banner. It’s no La Marseillaise or even Soviet National Anthem.

I mean, it’s definitely a great poem, but I don’t think that qualifies it for our National Anthem. Listen to La Marseillaise and then get back to me.
