Battlefield V tried this like 6 yrs ago.

WW2 battles in European theater where some infantry chick with blue hair, half shaven head style & sporting a steampunk bionic arm fit right in with the GI’s & Brits while fighting the Krauts.

Failed Bigly. Can you imagine!!

Totally immersive WW2 experience, yeah!

Sales did not go well.

* not even sure if the character was gay, but the not so subtle suggestions were all there. Of course I had to cancel my pre-order. As many others did as well.

That always reminds me of Spike Lee trying to go after Clint Eastwood for not casting black people in Flags Of Our Fathers.

Clint’s response was, amongst other things, that there weren’t any black soldiers at Iwo Jima and any black people involved on the US side would have been cooks on the ship because the military wasn’t integrated at that time.

Trying to make a serious piece, drama, action or otherwise, set in a specific time period in the past needs to have at least some semblance of realism or it takes people out of the work.

Ed O’Neill, best known as Al Bundy, ended up cut from one or more films as a result. Good actor but simply being known as Al Bundy meant that he couldn’t be taken seriously as a military officer in a court martial. Doing so took people out of the film and that is why he got cut.

GLAAD should fund it then.

Gaming studios aren’t stupid. They know a majority of gamers won’t want to play as a gay main character, so it’d be a guaranteed money loser. And it definitely won’t sell well in certain overseas markets that are huge for video games.

Isn't it weird how the folks who cry 'appropriation!' about everything are so hard pressed to do exactly that with history?

Black Cleopatra
Black Anne Boleyn
Indian Sir Issac Newton
Black everyone in Hamilton

Perception of an actor is a curious thing. From the original Superman (George Reeves) to today, actors who are known for ONE thing often don't get more roles. Of course, until they do.

How do they know who is gay and who is not at a work site? Unless you are an attention seeking freak, most people are there to do their job.

It depends on both how iconic the role is and how much range someone has to get away from that role.

The original Star Trek crew, minus Shatner, couldn’t really escape it.

Ray Walston, who was My Favorite Martian, traded one iconic role for another when he became Mr Hand in Fast Times At Ridgemont High.

David Caruso was associated with NYPD Blue for years despite only appearing for a little more than one season. He finally got a new lease in life when he got the CSI Miami role, which was effectively a new coat of paint on his past one.

And then you have people like George Clooney who were somewhat iconic in a role (Dr Doug on ER) who manage to transcend that.

Ed’s big problem was that MWC ran for 11 years and the role I mentioned was in the middle of its run. It takes time out of the public’s eye to find a new role after something like that, though he tries in various ways such as being Joe Friday on a Dragnet revival.

In his case, he ended up back on a sitcom (Modern Family) but, unlike Caruso, his new role was pretty different from his previous one. That’s helped him transcend from being Al Bundy to an actual actor in the eyes of the public, as it was something showing his range that actually got wide exposure.

Yeah, harder to branch out when you're currently in an 11 yr run for a show to do something else.

Meanwhile, Katey Sagal (Peggy) has gone on to do tons of stuff AFTER MWC, but then, she's an attractive woman with talent, so...

It helped that the Peggy Bundy character was partially a wig and very exaggerated, that a lot of what she did during and after MWC was voicework (Futurama) and that she had a pedigree in the business.

Her dad, Boris, was a director before he accidentally got himself killed walking into a helicopter.

Having a family background in other areas helps with connections if nothing else.
