Being difficult to invade because you are a remote backwater with no roads and horrible weather does not make you a Great Power.
How many battles had Napoleon lost prior to Russia?
Now do the multiple Russian-French battles subsequent to Moscow in which the French were decimated. By all means, do take your time.
You really should park the contrarian schtick. You do yourself a disservice.
For most of the 19th century historians cite six "major world powers" -- Russia, Great Britain, France, Austria-Hungary, Italy and Germany.

But Meloni has had this stance since she started. You going to criticize her for consistency?
Maybe I wasn't clear. I was talking about my misgivings about female politicians in general, not Meloni specifically.

Russia has natural advantages for defense.
That's not being a "great power". Hell, those defensive capabilities are why Russia stayed so isolated and behind Europe proper. Imperial conquest is a great driver in proliferation of development.
However, if Russia really sees defense as a sign of being a great power, I understand why they're so scared of NATO

Beginning with Peter the Great, Russia badly WANTED to be considered a Great Power. Because the Tsars were their cousins, the actual Powers let them pretend, but no one believed it. With the Napoleonic Wars, Russia finally at least had a legit claim for a few decades, but arse-kickings in the Crimean War and the Russo-Japanese War confirmed that Russia was NOT a Great Power. Just a regional bully.

And they were terrible in both world wars.
So, had we kept the US Army in England and Africa, and out of continental Europe entirely, the Russian Army would have overrun Germany on its own. Soviet victory was a fait d’accompli a year prior to Normandy.
Subsequent to German failures at Stalingrad and the Russian counteroffensive, the end was written for Hitler. It was just a matter of time.

Now post the costs.
Again, Russia has a huge population. It's the only thing that kept it from losing.
Having a huge population and sustaining unfathomable losses doesn't mean you did a good job

Now you are talking about the USSR, not Russia.
Without Western capital and manufacturing assistance, the USSR would not have accomplished the ends that you describe in WW2.
But yes, the USSR was a Great Power for about half a century. That is not the 1000 Years referenced earlier in the thread.

the Russo-Japanese War confirmed that Russia was NOT a Great Power.
No more than the Armada's defeat confirmed Spain was not a major power in the 16th/17th centuries, or the Franco-Prussian War confirmed France was not a major power.
Re: The Russo-Japanese War, TR realized the conflict confirmed Japan as a major power, and a de facto threat to the US as a "Pacific Nation." That's why he was so keen on negotiating a peace between the two.

Yes. The only time Russia had that claim

quote:USSR had about 2X the population of Germany-Austria. They outproduced German war products about 3-to-1 and suffered a similar casualty ratio. Nonetheless, it allowed the Soviets to kick the arse of an enemy which had swept the combined "super-power" armies of France and Great Britain from the continent in a matter of months.
Russia has a huge population
Are you attempting to now undercut your own contention of "about 45 years in the 2nd half of the 20th century"?

It works less-well in territory with no roads and with only mud tracks that are about ten feet deep.

You do this to yourself. SMH. It's like messageboard Munchausen's Syndrome.
Right?
or
Like, you know, all those French superhighways leading from Normandy through the hedgerows?
Got it?
