Dems truly know what the country needs.
A group of Senate Democrats are pushing to include a provision in the next coronavirus relief package that would provide access to free phone and video calls for people incarcerated in federal prisons.
The lawmakers point out that despite the Federal Communications Commission (FCC)’s regulations on interstate prison calls, which account for about 20 percent of calls made by federal prisoners, telecommunications providers can still charge up to $25 for fifteen minutes for the remaining 80 percent of calls.
“Regular communication with loved ones has consistently proven to help incarcerated people succeed in reentering the workforce after their release, and allowing them to stay connected will benefit them and their communities in the short and long term," the senators wrote in a letter addressed to Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) and Senate Minority Leader Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.).
The group includes Democratic Sens. Amy Klobuchar (Minn.), Tammy Duckworth (Ill.), Cory Booker (N.J.) and Elizabeth Warren (Mass.). Sen. Angus King, a Maine Independent, also signed onto the letter.

Didn't Bloomberg get busted for his campaign hiring out a firm that used inmates for campaign calls?
Sounds like something they would be pushing for

I have no problem with this.
ETA: I do have a problem with this
Make it supervised video calls for 20 mins to specified people.

I think it is bullshite what these guys have to pay to talk to their family.
It doesn't help with rehabilitating a human being.
Everything is a fricking money grab. frick this world.

its a fricking crime the way we let private corporations like Jpay rip off the inmates and there families.

This seems like something a local politician gets a kick back from.

They already get the one. Why do they need more?
Don't like it... don't do things that cause you to end up incarcerated.

The dems know what the next large voting bloc wants while incarcerated.

Sorry, but Geauxjudge needs to pay his own damn phone bill.

I don't have any problem with this, especially since prisoners can't receive any normal visitation. The goal is to rehabilitate these people and not further break them until they know nothing but violence and anger.

that is what happens when it is all outsourced. All prisons have great communication lines ran to them, no reason a phone system cant be set up and ran locally at the prison or by the FBP. Should be free and reward for good behavior.

People in prison, many of whom are nonviolent offenders, have not been able to have visitation with families for months. Providing them with the ability to call or in some instances video conference with family seems like a small token of basic human decency.

I have no real problem with this, except what is it doing in a virus relief package?
And why isn't there a "Buy SpotCheckBilly a New Boat" provision in that relief bill?

Apparently, because COVID restrictions prevent face-to-face visits.
Yeah, I can't say I have a problem with it. Putting barriers between inmates being able to converse with family/friends seems counter-productive to helping them reintegrate to society once they are released.
Not everyone is prison is a cold-blooded murderer or rapist.

Look up what the inmate industrial complex companies donate to political campaigns. It is mind boggling.
These are the big players
CCA
Lasalle Corrections Corp
Securus
jpay
THe GEO group
Core Civc
The management companies are getting $75 per day per inmate. We are spending $5 Billion per year on housing illegals.
