One of my best friends from youth has a grandpa who goes by Dago. I didn't even know that a slur for years. My friend we have called Wop for years too. I'm Irish and I don't care if someone calls me Mick.

Yeah, all this dago talk has me wanting a wop salad! That being said, I grew up with many Italians, just like my dad in his early years when his family moved to NOLA. We always said 'wop bastard' or 'dago mf' to our friends and had no issue with them calling us something re: our French heritage. Trouble today is folks are too damn sensitive re: everything and this is a sign of insecurity with your heritage. Most of the people I know are very proud of their heritage. My wife is often mistaken for Italian, I guess because she doesn't have an accent, but she is actually Mexican, and she will let you know she is very proud of that fact!
