They got too big for their britches after WWII, IMHO, considering that they lost in Indochina (Vietnam) and Algeria between the 50s and the end of the 60s.

They want to make a bit splash and show how good they are but have a bad habit of underperforming outside of hitting a Greenpeace boat.

Somehow I missed the submarine news BTW, Marxists, how are those foreign relationships going now? Wasn’t trump supposed to do this?

Don’t feel bad. It’s getting impossible to keep up with the incompetence without constant attention.

Losing a contract is NOT a reason to recall an ambassador.

France's foreign policy meshes with the commercial interests of their corporations. This is some serious shite with them.

Australia is much closer to China than France is. I’d rather have bases in Australia in exchange for the nuclear tech. Get bent, Macron homo

It was a binary decision huh?

Is having US bases in Australia part of the deal?

In the works

quote:

U.S. President Joe Biden’s administration is hoping to secure more U.S. military basing rights in the region, multiple current and former officials told Foreign Policy, in the wake of a landmark deal to build nuclear-powered submarines with Britain and Australia.

Plans to bring rotations of U.S. fighters and bombers to northern Australia will be raised at a remote ministerial meeting between U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin, U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken, and their Australian counterparts, officials said.

Two top Biden administration National Security Council officials, Kurt Campbell and Rush Doshi, briefed officials and experts on the plan for the Australians to field nuclear-powered submarines during a call Wednesday night. During the call, described to Foreign Policy by one participant, the officials said the deal could eventually extend to include long-range precision strike weapons. The Agence France-Presse first reported that Australia would receive Tomahawk missiles.

Love him. I require detailed analyses of all sitting executive branch officials at the cabinet level and above from my clients before I agree to represent them. You?

France is an ally, but they’re not traditionally as close as Australia has been. They’ve diverged from us over the years with deGaulle and Iraq. We paid them back for Lafayette with WW2 so it’s very much a what have you done for me lately situation.

The French are also more capable militarily than the UK and Australia combined. They will get over this incident after some obligatory hand-wringing. But we should not do anything unnecessary to alienate them, generally.

They are throwing a fit over this new deal because production was about to ramp up under their deal to build the Aussies diesel subs. That $60+billion and thousands of jobs that us and the UK snuck out from under them.

We would react similarly if one of the F-35 partner nations pulled out at the 11th hour in favor of the Rafales.

But, but, “America is back in the game. Respected in the world.”

Give me some bronzer, a pompadour, and some $1.79 per gallon of gas.

Keep your “infrastructure.”

I don’t doubt that, but they can’t supersede geography. Until and unless they can project power in the South China Sea as well as Australia can host us to be able to do so, they’re going to lose this one.
