Why are you in favor of sanctuary cities?

I challenge you to lay out your defense of sanctuary cites. I dare you to do it. Convince me why I should be in favor of sanctuary cities.

Edit - If you do take my challenge, please include the word "illegal" when talking about the immigrants who benefit from living in sanctuary cities. LEGAL immigrants don't need the protection of sanctuary cities.

Their argument is that illegal aliens that are witnesses to crimes won't come forward because they fear being deported.

Immigrants shouldn't have to fear being deported while cooperating with law enforcement for other issues.

For example

If a neighbor who is an undocumented immigrant, witnesses domestic violence, she is more likely to report the violence to the police or be a witness in a judicial proceeding if there is no threat that she'll be deported because of her participation

So you'd support extending that sanctuary to other criminals as well? If so, where is your line for what is not acceptable?

So, we shouldn't enforce our laws against illegal immigration so that a person who shouldn't even be here can feel secure about reporting various crimes?

Should we start referring to them as undocumented watchdogs? How many "undocumented watchdogs" does the average city need?

Sorry, I don't get your reasoning at all.

Because it isn't about sanctuary or promoting illegals. It is about the feds requiring local police resources and local jail resources to be used free of charge to do federal immigration policing. What you don't realize is that the feds want local police forces, which are already underfunded and understaffed, to use their forces to detain people on immigration holds, when they don't have enough jail space for local criminals. The local governments have had enough. They simply don't want to devote their limited resources to immigration issues, which are federal issues.

The Republicans are using scare tactics about illegals being criminals because they are illegals to try to bring down right wing rage to force local police forces to devote limited resources to being immigration cops. In non-republican areas, they are more vocal about the "f-you." In more conservative areas they are simply saying that they don't have the manpower and jail space.

There. That's a valid reason not to do it.

Why can't they do it anonymously? Doesn't New Orleans have a hotline for that?

If the undocumented immigrant weren't there, as they shouldn't be, the home could be occupied by a legal resident who won't have that problem with cooperating with law enforcement. Problem solved

Should they fear it outside of this extenuating circumstance?

No because an undocumented immigrant hasn't necessarily harmed anyone

Neither have a wide variety of other criminals by the same standard, but I'd argue (and win) that they have all harmed many people.
