I'm pretty tired myself of seeing state laws being proposed, passing the legal smell test before being put on a ballot, voted for approval, enacted into law and then at a later date some one individual judge comes along and says "you are wrong, I am right".
That is when you know the power has been taken from the people, imo.

One Judge stomping on state's rights is not "Mississippi changing" at least not in the wishes of the people here. Just more FedGov tyranny pushing an agenda.
This always strikes me as one of the dumber thoughts on these matters.
If a state wants to enslave people, should it be ok if the majority votes that way?
And if you stupidly say well that would be unconstitutional, on what grounds was this ban overturned?

And I have no problem with gay marriage, but I believe change should come at the will of the people
Just like civil rights came to the south because of the will of the people? Just because segregation was outlawed because of the will of the people? Just because oh heck, many many many other things. Are you seriously this dense?
It really doesn't matter if it is the will of the people. The constitution trumps the will of the people or the state's rights to trample on said constitution.

That is some funny shite right there.....
Heterosexual couples do not have to do anything other than have a state issued marriage license to gain the rights listed that require gay people to go through the steps of obtaining said legal rights. One legal action for the straight couple, several actions for each the participants in a gay marriage.
The state should simply get out of the marriage business. A marriage is a contract between two people and their supreme being of choice. The marriage license that is issued is a contract. The church has no business conferring any legal rights to anyone and the state has no business mucking around in personal issues such as marriage. The state should also ( and would be free to do so) get out of the business of recognizing marriages....what makes the state capable of determining such a thing? Nothing. What the state can determine is what a legal business contract is...and that is all a state issued marriage license is. This is where this issue is headed anyway....and it gives proponents of each side a victory....the state can recognize domestic partnerships for any adults who chose to enter into one and the church can marry who ever they dam well please. Even those hard core proponents of gay marriage would have to shut the frick up because the state would no longer be recognizing any marriages....all such partnerships would be called what they are...a legal partnership.
If you doubt that a marriage is nothing more than a binding legal agreement between two parties try getting out of said agreement through the church alone...it can't be done...you have to file for divorce with the state. The state has the sole power to end domestic partnerships....they have nothing at all to do with a church and the church should appreciate this fact. The trouble is the church likes the idea of using the muscle of the state to enforce its doctrine....

What if States start ignoring decrees by federal judges?

If change had to come purely by the will of the people in the state of Mississippi or any other southern state, there would still be "colored" water fountains in place. Bible thumpers in the south are not exactly open minded free thinkers.

The irony in your statement is strong

Gay marriage in Pississippi? What is next, interracial gay marriage in Pississippi?
Actually that would make a heck of a reality show.

I happen to know an inter-racial, gay couple who consider themselves married. In Mississippi.

Thanks for all the "congrats" y'all. Nice to see no over the top negative comments as well. Except for the former criminal from Alabama of course.

And once again, no one did a voter breakdown by race.
I guess black people will never get called out for their hatred of the gays.

Totally, completely, false. Not disputable. Not debatable. Just false.

To claim noting bans a same sex couple from marrying in a state with prohibitions against state recognition for same sex marriage is incredibly myopic and condescending.
This is what Louisiana's constitution says:
This Miss judge has it correct. There is no real state interest, no societal harm which comes from its recognition but instead an actual state interest and societal good which comes from state recognized gay marriages which is the well being of families and kids. And yes gay couples have kids.
The sad thing is Louisiana had the corrupt Judge Feldman hear our case and he proved not only is he corrupt but an idiot.
This is what Louisiana's constitution says:
quote:
Marriage in the state of Louisiana shall consist only of the union of one man and one woman. No official or court of the state of Louisiana shall construe this constitution or any state law to require that marriage or the legal incidents thereof be conferred upon any member of a union other than the union of one man and one woman. A legal status identical or substantially similar to that of marriage for unmarried individuals shall not be valid or recognized. No official or court of the state of Louisiana shall recognize any marriage contracted in any other jurisdiction which is not the union of one man and one woman.[3]

You really are showing your ignorance here. Same sex marriage is an "absolute nullity" in Louisiana the same as bigamy or incestuous marriage or two 5 year olds getting married. It has zero effect and if it becomes an issue in court such as spousal immunity in testimony or support or community property, any judge MUST declare the "marriage" null and void.
I can call myself the head coach of LSU (and probably know more about football than the real head coach) but it means nothing, as does calling yourself "married" to a same sex partner.

This is basically the state of secular marriage anyway, might as well make it the official model for everybody heteros, homos or polys.
There was/is more afoot than Gay Marriage in this effort.
I have absolutely no doubt marriage is the end-all for some gays, and probably most who post here. If in fact, marriage turns out to be the the end-point, I will be very happy for all parties impacted.
But to be clear, even in states that do not recognize GM, any gay-friendly church could marry a samesex couple, then have them sign a packet of standard legal documents that, as you say, basically comprise secular marriage. Voila! Gay Marriage!

Have them get in touch with my ppl and we will call Oprah and get the wheels rolling on a tv show. I know plenty of rednecks from Ms that we could pay to start drama (like they do on all the reality shows).

I give exactly 0 shits about gay marriabe, but steve and bill being able to legally call themselves husband and husband (or whatever the new hip term is) is not the end game. Ghey rights ppl will become like Sandra Fluke, Sharpton, etc ans just want more and more special treatment. They won't rest until a gay can force a catholic priest to marry then in the Vatican and an employer can be thrown in jail for not hiring a homosexual (even if that is not the reason they weren't hired) or we become the United Socialists of America.
