I can't speak for everyone, but in my case it was the fact that the other option was perhaps the most corrupt and incompetent person I human history that made me vote for him.

Let's start here: No one "fears" diversity. There are tens of millions of people who doubt that diversity is in fact a plus, and therefore they have no incentive to push for diversity, over, say, accomplishment, or ability, or intelligence, or a good work ethic, etc.
