After everything that is going on I was wondering what percent of American workers are considered essential? I've done some research but can't find a number. Just wondering if anyone had ran across this somewhere

I'm extremely fortunate that my office was totally prepared for this. All of us can work from home.

You rang? How can I help you?

I'm working from home at the moment, but will turn essential the longer this goes on. Heh.

There seems to be very little consistent logic as to what is "essential" and what isn't. For instance, why is a restaurant "essential"? Don't get me wrong, I don't think they should shut down completely, nor do I want them to. But people can find ways to eat without visiting a restaurant. Hell, I remember not that long a go when going out to eat was a special occasion moreso that the "norm."
Commercial building construction is still going on. But is that "essential"? Particularly when you consider it's very likely the expected occupants won't actually be allowed to occupy the building for the foreseeable future.
Dentist offices are closed for regular business operations. But Lowes and Home Depot are rolling.

My point exactly. If 50% of the population is considered essential. ( idk what the actual number is) what good does shouting down a state do if a good chunk of the population has to go to work.

One rough calculation you could do is find out how many people work in the service industries—specifically tourism, restaurants, and entertainment. I know that not all restaurant and service industry workers have been laid off or are not able to work, but that discrepancy would probably cover the workers of other sectors that are not considered essential and are not currently able to work.

My brother-in-law in Texas is in the pool cleaning business. He read on a "what is essential jobs" website that pool cleaning and lawn service made the list.

I just did al sorts of math off the federal governments numbers and came up with about 78% would be essential

I pass by several construction sites and they are all working. So apparently construction is considered essential business in Alabama.
