The results come from a nationwide online survey of 1,055 adults 18 and older conducted by Global Strategy Group for ESPN. The sampling is representative of country demographics including gender, race, geographic location and political affiliation. The survey included both sports fans and non-sports fans and was conducted from Sept. 26-28. The margin of error for a survey of this sample size is plus or minus 3 percent.

Asked if they approve or disapprove of the recent NFL player protests, 51 percent said they either somewhat or strongly disapprove, compared to 39 percent who did approve. When broken down by race, 72 percent of African-American respondents either strongly approved or somewhat approved of the protests, while 62 percent of whites either somewhat disapproved or strongly disapproved.

people were also split on whether the protests will affect their interest in the NFL. Among all respondents, 14 percent were more interested and 40 percent were less interested -- with 43 percent saying the protests had no impact on their interest. Among avid NFL fans, 48 percent said their interest is not impacted, but 31 percent said they were less interested in the league because of the protests (19 percent said they were more interested).

Very big racial divide.

You can always tell the results of a poll are something the media doesn't like when they say the results are "divided"

If the numbers were the other way the headline would be "majority of Americans approve of the protests"

I feel like average people are forced to develop opinions

I would say I disapproved or strongly disapproved, but in the end I really don't care

Nobody is saying the players don't have a legal right to do what they're doing.

Talking about the First Amendment here just proves how clueless you are.

Companies can and do have the power to fire their employees for making political statements at work. It happens every day

The NFL has proven the week that they are racist in their selection of cornerbacks.

All sorts of white people can backpedal

Bad sample. The salient issue from an economic standpoint is what sport fans, specifically NFL fans, think about it. While I don't think the goose that laid the golden egg has been killed, it is being slowly choked and the axe is next.

Interesting.

I would say I approved..........because they failed to ask me the right question.

Which is that I approve virtually all free speech and think we, as Americans should value free expression FAR more than to just say, "meh, didn't get arrested for it".

The question I would be looking for is, "do you approve of the one way street that exists in virtually all corners of society regarding free expression"?

To that, the answer is nope. I do not.
