Do you honestly believe that? Before you answer, think about how many moves that he has made this go round that have been challenged in court by Democrats, and found to be Constitutional.
This man understands the Constitution better than the entire Democratic Party combined.
Most of the country would like to see this as illegal. I understand the “free speech” aspect of it. You can say whatever you want, but there may be consequences. Why not the same with burning our flag?
The OP is correct- this is yet ANOTHER trap to make the Dems defend the wrong side of a 90-10 issue.

It should be legal to burn all flags....not that I want to burn the American flag nor do I like seeing it. But when we put special restrictions on burning a pride flag and charge people with a hate crime then do nothing when the US flag is burned that seems to fly in the face of the idea of free speech that people defend burning the American flag.

ANY POTUS (even Potatobrain) is surrounded by advisors who understand issues. So even if the POTUS did not initially understand, he's exposed to the viewpoint.
The Bill of Rights should afford the same protections to individuals burning the "Pride" flag as those burning the US flag. Is that what we've seen in reality? Nope! The former has been charged as hate speech.
If one cannot legally burn a "Pride" flag, then one cannot burn the US flag. Simple really. As long as there is a differential there is a question. Trump is pushing the question.
