Keep in mind that this was also a MacBook so it is possible that the laptop had the Apple chat built into it like an iPhone.

Laptops can text via apps. Convos texted on phone apps would appear in apps on the laptops.

If you have Icloud or you back your cell up to your laptop (iTunes) then it automatically holds and captures all that data on the cell phone, including texts.
