“It is very tragic that one of our senior citizens would find himself in such desperate circumstances where he felt murder and suicide were the only option. Help is always available with a call to 911,” Whatcom County Sheriff Bill Elfo said.”

Very sad that’s the only way out they saw. It shouldn’t be like that at all in this country. Medical bills can absolutely bankrupt people. The costs can be ridiculous.

The Sheriff is right that are resources that might have helped. Charities, churches, and family can all help. I wonder if they tried reaching out.

They didn't think of the option to Renounce their US citizenship, and then cross the border into the USA as illegal aliens claiming political asylum?

Very sad story. Unbelievable that in this country of abundance we live in, the most vital thing we have, our health, is at risk for the many that can not afford access to decent healthcare.

Don’t know. Article didn’t say. But there are resources that could have helped them. There has to be more to this story

Good post. Very true. We have great medical care but the costs are so very inflated. I have shoulder replacement and it was over 80k. Ridiculous. My insurance covered it or I would’ve been in trouble.

There are resources. And there are ways to get what people need. Unless they have economic resources they are unwilling to tap that excludes them based on financial means or they refuse to put forth any effort to get the available assistance. Never had an issue in 20 years unless someone had too many assets and refused to touch them or were to lazy to fill out a few forms. Of course, they may be victims of a big corporate clinic that didn't bother to help guide them or take the time to help them navigate the system.

They were 77 and 76, respectively.

They had Medicare. This story is BS.

I don’t know that it is BS. They may have had expenses Medicare didn’t cover. Don’t assume they didn’t have Medicare though. They may have

Do you think theres enough money to pay for every single U.S. citizen and then 50 million illegal immigrants? And will that healthcare be quality?

That is a good post. I know people who have had to tap into their savings or investments to pay for medical costs. Luckily they made very good money but it still ate away a lot of what they had.

I just wonder if this couple did that and had exhausted what they had?

Sure... prior to America's "Great Society" that's how things worked. Now Uncle Sam is your mandated lifeline.

These folks gave their Rulers the "finger" and went out on their own terms.

No. I’m not saying that. I’m speaking more about how high costs are ( trial lawyers bear some blame there) and highlighting resources outside of the government that people can use.

There may be people reading this and are struggling with medical bills so I’m hoping that this post gives them a heads up so to speak about reaching out to these other resources for help.

I wish our health care was not so cost prohibitive but I do not want this country to have a UK NHS either. That’s a big mess too.

Some truth in this. But before LBJ poor people still had trouble paying for health care. I’d dare say churches and charities do more now or at least as much as they did before. But there are limits to what they can do.

I'm just thankful we live in a country where we CAN mortgage a house for medical care, or even set up a 'go fundme' if that's what we so choose. Versus paying for your own care being illegal.

We used to have "friendly societies" all over the place, but government destroyed them.

Healthcare costs were extremely low, because of "lodge practice" for these friendly societies.

If government got the frick out of the way, this would probably happen again and more people would have more affordable and better care.
