Not exactly that. However, if you report a rumor without any substantive evidence, after it has been denied, you're not "reporting" - you're gossiping.

You see, "reporting" would be getting direct or circumstantial evidence of the truth of the rumor. "Gossiping" is just repeating unsubstantiated bullshite that someone planted. I mean, they can continue to gossip, but it brought them to a trust level comparable to Congress and used car salesmen.
