Of course he blames Trump and his toxic rhetoric. 
He's probably giving us notice that CNN is fixing to fire his arse but he wants it to appear that he is the one making the decision to bow out.

Because CNN is still a profit making enterprise. It is a dumpster fire over there and some high priced talent that is underperforming (pretty much everyone except AC and even then) against the competition is going to get clipped.
The behind the scenes bloodbath is going to be impressive, but we'll only really hear about the on air firings.
