I don't think the issue is dumb people. There have always been dumb people and I think as a whole there we are smarter than 100 years ago.

The issue is, well I should say one issue is, the level of media saturation. The president is as much celebrity as politician now. Maybe even more so.

So people now vote for "who's cool" or "who's shares their pain" or who is a tough guy.

What's wrong with making sure someone can read what they're voting on before they vote on it?

Or, alternatively, confirming that they're not of a mental condition
Because the whole purpose of the vote is to give EVERYONE the illusion that they have a choice.

This is one of the oldest topics in political theory. Plato wrote about it (no, I'm not kidding).

Plato became very cynical about Greek democracy when it resulted in the death sentence of Socrates for merely questioning the existence of multiple Gods with human characteristics. The crime was 'corruption of the youth.'

But Plato's idea of govt by the smartest is hard to implement. The closest example I can think of is 18th century USA. With a very small population we were governed by a large number of geniuses.

Just read the letters and speeches of Franklin, Washington, Jefferson, Adams, etc.

Then compare that with modern leaders like Obama, Biden, Bush, etc.

We are living the movie Idiocracy.

I come across very few even moderately informed people in my day to day life.

That is why the media, which is now openly and unabashedly engaged in advocacy, can effectively appoint our politicians.

They can lay down a narrative that is adopted by the masses in a heart beat. They can kill one just as easily.

People are stupid.

Right wingers loved Democracy circa 2004. "Love it or leave it" they said. They lost a couple of elections since then and all the sudden they are tired of all the little people who are "beneath" them, ruining their vision for the country

It's a pathetic attitude.

you're right, but it's failing because you get things like the Citizens United ruling that fans the flames of the kind of crony capitalism the far right has been making it's living off for years, and all the sudden you no longer have a government that's by the people, of the people, for the people.

The character and quality of our populace is what is killing us, not corporate interests.

You see we don't live in a democracy. Democracy is when the people own the means of production. When the people own capital and decide how to spend it will mean we have democracy.

There needs to be a transition to true democracy. What we need is a socialist party controlling all branches of government. You can have democracy within a socialist party with internal elections and democratic centralism.

In democratic centralism the party comes to a democratic consensus and then has a unified front in governing after all discussion has been finished and a decision made. The party needs to have a unified front.

You know, I'm not sure which system of govt is more inapplicable to reality, pure anarchism or what you just described.

The old breed of liberal "We know better than you" is corrosive.

Given libs control the schools, control the media, and control the recording of history it's kind of a wonder the general populace isn't dumber and less informed than it already is. They are working on it though, with their assault on excellence.

It's called the 'tyranny of the majority'. When the Pubs get back in power, watch the shite hit the fan. The very thing they're bitching about will be even worse then. JMHO
