Does Schumer still believe in his immigration reform from 2009?

quote:

• Illegal immigration is wrong. And a primary goal of comprehensive immigration reform must be to dramatically curtail future illegal immigration
• Operational control of our borders through significant additional increases in infrastructure, technology and border personnel must be achieved within a year of enactment
• Biometric based employer verification system with tough enforcement and auditing is necessary to significantly diminish the job magnet that attracts illegal immigrants to the U.S. And to provide certainity and simplicity to employers
• All illegal aliens present in the U.S. in the date of enactment of our bill, must quickly register their presence with U.S. government and submit to a rigorous process to converting to illegal status and earning a path to citizenship or face imminent deportation
• Family reunification is a cornerstone value of our immigration system by dramatically reducing illegal immigration we can create more room for both family immigration and employer based immigration
• We must encourage the world’s best and brightest individuals to come to the U.S. and create the new technologies and businesses that will employ countless American workers. But must discourage businesses from using our immigration laws as means to obtain temporary and less expensive foreign labor to replace capable American workers
• We must create a system that converts the current flow of primarily low skilled illegal immigrants into the US, into a more manageable and controlled flow of legal immigrants that can be absorbed by our economy

Cryin Chuck would sell his own kids if it gave him a political advantage.

I agree. We should dramatically increase our deportations to reunite the families

That states pretty explicitly (1) amnesty for current illegals who go through the process of legalization, (2) bettering the system to allow for legal, primarily skilled immigration, and (3) doesn’t point to a contiguous, physical wall but alludes to using advanced technology to monitor. Looks pretty reasonable.

Seems like it hasn’t honestly changed that much seeing as the point of DACA and even further beyond it was in his platform to begin with back then.

Democrats are honestly running on this idea of the kids before you did it and won’t be punished by if you do it, there will be consequences.

Personally, I would be willing to compromise on this. After vetting people who are illegal immigrants, I would be okay with defining a clear path to citizenship. I would rather them become a citizen, pay taxes and support the system, than to drain system without paying into it. Would likely be to onerous to deport everyone who is an illegal immigrant.

yup seems reasonable to me.

Number 1 do you think the vast majority of illegals wouldn’t be in the 49% who don’t pay income taxes? Number 2 if you are a conservative you will be essentially conceding Texas and will never have a conservative congress or president again

Yeah most of them will be. But they're already a drain on the system. Just look at any hospital emergency room, and you'll see that. Having a path to citizenship, wont' change that fact, but allows documentation of their presence. Also forces employers to pay their portion of taxes, instead of it being under the table.

Would I rather that they are deported? Well yeah, that would be nice. But if I had to choose a point in which to compromise in order to achieve the rest of immigration reform, it would probably be that one.
