Then how would you distinguish the real Americans (eg. Choctaw, Seminole, Apache, Sioux, etc.) from the rest of us.
In Canada especially, they refer to the aboriginal peoples of the Americas as "First Nations."

The problem is - the races "were" Mongoloid, Caucasoid and Negoid. Well - times changed and the connotations of those words changed.

Negroid/Negro is just WAAYYYY too close to another word which has been deemed wholly unacceptable - especially so for white people in the late 20th/early 21st century.
Made that mistake in high school after learning about the three major race terms. It got uncomfortable very quickly...

I assume the NAACP and HBCU and UNCF don't mind if we call them coloreds, blacks and negroes, so....

Do you call blacks black or AA? Why?
In general I don't call them anything other than "people". If I'm describing someone physically while asking someone if they know "XYZ", for example, I use "black".

Unless they were born in Africa, you're not African anything...

I have never used the term African American in my life. If there is a need to identify race I've always considered black to be sufficient.

I use 'black', and I prefer the melanin-enriched refer to me as 'honkey' or 'White Devil', although, I was once called a 'racist white-arse bitch' by a young black man.
BTW, everything preceding 'although' was offered up in humor. For the record. Lest anyone overreact.

Well then what race do you call Asian Americans? Yellows?
I do call Caucasians 'whites'. It's socially acceptable. Same with the term 'blacks'.
'African American' as a term for blacks living in America is inaccurate. Not all blacks are from Africa, at least not recently. Some are from the Caribbean, Central America, etc. And if you go back far enough, say about 1 million years, we're ALL from Africa. And not all African Americans are black. Some are white. Charlize Theron is an African American. She was actually born in Africa and lived there for awhile, although she now lives in America.
Do you call Charlize Theron an African American? How about Ernie Els, or Gary Player?

Technically, all Whites are Caucasoid, but not all Caucasians are White.

They're European-Africans.

The race that you call white people is "white". The race that you call black people is "black". And the race that you call Asians is "American"??? And yeah I know that not all black people are not African American. I said that in my initial response as to why I preferred black.

Of course I don't call them African American. They're white and not of African heritage. Barack Obama was born in Hawaii. Do you consider him Pacific Islander?

Mostly their name, of course one guy I know wants to be called 'Black'( as in his name is Black) and he is, but some do not know how to take that. They feel weird saying it to him.

quote:I mean I call Asians who are Americans, Americans. I don't call them Asian Americans. At least the term Asian is accurate, however, since all of them come from Asia.
And the race that you call Asians is "American"???
quote:So we agree that to use the term African American as a descriptive for all blacks is inaccurate, which was my point to begin with.

Do you not see how absurd it is to say that someone BORN and RAISED in Africa and who moves to America is NOT an African American because they are white? But someone who is born in, say, Alabama, and whose parents were born in Alabama, and their parents before them but who is black IS an African American, even though they have never been to Africa, can't speak any African languages, know nothing of African culture, and who probably know next to nothing about Africa? Simply because of the color of their skin? Sounds racist as hell to me.
