Do the Confederate statues coming done peacefully bother you or is ripping down the issue?

Personally, I’ve always wondered why there were statues of people that lost an all out war to secede.
I did some research and many of these statues were put up following Reconstruction and the early 1900s with let’s just say- not exactly the purest of intentions. Many were put up to express displeasure with Blacks being freed and more and more rights being bestowed on them. Also they were put up to thumb the nose at the Federal Govt that was pushing the equality message.
Do I think these statues in the year 2020 contribute to AA plight? Hell no. They have been here for decades and I dare say that 99% of the population that sees them on a daily basis even knows who or what the particular person did or stood for.
Now, do I think it’s ridiculous and naive to think that removal will cure the ills of AA? Nope not one bit. They have other issues and this one is superficial to them.
I guess if people want them down it’s fine. But that needs to be done through a process not anarchy and destruction.
What say you?
I’m MAGA as they come and have lived in SE LA my whole life but the statue issue is neither personal nor makes much sense to me.
Downvote away.
ETA: The removal of all of the others- Lincoln, abolitionists, Grant, and Roosevelt etc is really fricked up.
Summary: Confederate statues probably bad.
The rest should remain

They’re both issues.
They started with Confederate soldiers because it was the easiest sell.
Now it’s Lincoln. Next it’s Rushmore. Then it’s reparations and the Constitution.

I think the people that live in the cites should vote to take them down or leave them up and if the vote is to take down, they should take them down carefully and find somewhere to put them.

they aren't coming down peacefully, and they clearly blew past "confederate statues"

It bothers me to no end. Run away from History and you're doomed to repeat it. Only the emotionally weak and traumatized would be psychologically damaged by concrete and bronze.

1) I am okay with any local citizenry deciding what goes up / stays up in a civilized, open discussion, vote way
2) I keep seeing all this talk about "why these traitors" and "south went to war", etc. But, in the end, amnesty and forgiveness was granted. The South was welcomed back into the fold. If amnesty is given...then amnesty is given. I don't battle over that. Once forgiven...then, FORGIVE and move on.
I don't care if the statues stay or go. I just hate the "they were traitors...why do they get a statue in the first place" silliness

Taking down the statues does absolutely nothing for race relations. If anything it creates a wider gap.

There is nothing peaceful about what’s going on now in our country, these people (and politicians) want anarchy so they can eventually move to more government control. This is the left ramping up the fundamental change they want for this country.

quote:Agreed. How could you tear down Lincoln? It's the destruction if the inner fabric of the nation by foreign agitators.

The problem clearly shown over the last few weeks is that there is an effort to completely eliminate america in its most positive light and replace it with a sense that everything we’ve achieved is through ill-gotten gains and must be destroyed.
Tearing down is negative. Have a plan to replace it with something more powerful that shows how great we are as a country. As an example, we’ve had many war heroes since the civil war that should be considered for renaming the various military bases. And there is no reason to lump all confederate generals into the same bucket. Robert Lee was positive figure for this nation. Eliminating him is very wrong.

Mostly in agreement. The confederate statues shouldn’t have ever been erected. Especially on city centers, courthouses and the like. They need to go peacefully. But need to go with no fanfare and there really isn’t much to counter on keeping them.
If it involves the southern US secession from the US, then none of it should be celebrated. It needs to be studied and taught in school, but not celebrated with statues and flags etc.
I don’t understand anyone’s support of them.
And I live in the south and am from the south.

Neither really, it's more the indiscriminate "thought" process.
In New Orleans there is a huge difference between Lee who didn't really have any connection to New Orleans or Louisiana, and P.G.T. Beauregard who was active in New Orleans including holding office and became quite progressive for the time.

Coming down peacefully is stupid; ripping them down is vandalism. Remember when it was just the Confederate flag? Now places are removing statues of Abe Lincoln, U.S. Grant, and other figures in American history who had nothing to do with the Confederacy.

Don't be obtuse and retarded. You're giving Covington a bad name.

Angry folks with this.
I didn’t say they were being taken down peacefully. Quite the contrary. The question was posed as to whether if they were being taken down peacefully ie through a function of a vote change your feelings as to them coming down?
Some of you all really need to look up why they erected in the first place.
It wasn’t simply for remembrance.
