It doesn't help any of us to pretend that Trump is being serious about acquiring Greenland, Canada, or the Panama Canal.
I think he’s dead serious about Greenland and the Panama Canal.
He views those as pre-reqs for a solid defensive posture in the western hemisphere.
If we can’t switch naval vessels from the Atlantic to the Pacific because our greatest rival controls the canal that’s a massive issue and it makes it impossible to be less interventionist if we have that liability in our strategic defense.
Greenland is rare earth and blocking subs and anything coming out of Europe or Russia.
Canada I don’t get outside of not allowing China to have a presence militarily which apparently they’ve begun to establish, but while we don’t need them as an alliance member, we cannot allow them to be a puppet state for the CHICOMS.

Again…?
Perhaps you’re the one that is confused.

So should we just allow them to tariff the hell out of us with no response?
No one is arguing for that. The argument is that the timing and the tone of Trump’s words killed the Conservative Party's chances of winning in the election next month.
Instead of insulting Canada and Canadians, Trump could have waited until after the election to correct the trade imbalance with a better negotiating partner.

You’re blaming Trump for how idiot Canadians vote?
Serious brah?
Serious brah?

Dear Ted. Election would have been in October otherwise.
And if Canadians are that fricking retarded, they deserve to keep the same shitty governments.

Trump negotiated a wonderful trade deal with Canada in 2018, he said so himself. Let’s just honor the agreement and stay out of their politics.
Then in 2022 Canada vastly expanded its tariffs on us. You knew that, right?

Maybe you're right. It would be nice to hear mention of some realistic means of accomplishing those goals.

Quotas kicked in that were already in the deal leading to the tariffs. Trump mislead you. Surprise. Why do you think he had to use the fentanyl excuse? We’re the rogue nation not Canada

The squabble between Canada and the US is rooted in ideological differences, not economic.
The USMCA agreement in 2018 was a bilateral agreement crafted between the US and Mexico. Remember that Canada, under Trudeau and Freedland refused to participate in the months leading up to Mexico signing, and subsequently signed months later making it a tri-lateral agreement.
Tariffs eventually forced Canada to sign, but without having much input to the agreement ….. that is why Canada has never really accepted the agreement they signed. They preferred the ability to abuse the US via the previous NAFTA agreement, especially with respect to automobiles.

The USMCA is a major structural shift in the U.S., Mexico and Canada, trade agreement. While the new agreement does not form an actual trade-bloc, the agreement removes most of the exploitation of the U.S. market that existed within NAFTA.
The U.S. and Mexico are the primary benefactors; Canada notsomuch.

Canada is in deep shite regardless. Best to let the left take the blame for what they created.

quote:Exactly. We need to redefine the term 'ally' because most of our supposed allies have been screwing us over for decades. They are really upset that Trump is pointing that out and taking action to end it. In the grand scheme of things, Canada is completely irrelevant.
Your premise is that as an "ally," Canada would be a fairer trading partner? How has that worked up until this point?

If Trump were a surgeon, the only instrument he would use would be a hacksaw....
I was hoping he would avoid some of the missteps from his first administration but ....
And no one is "solely blaming Trump" but he instantly made it harder for the more conservative Canadians to get and maintain traction....

He did. They got rid of Trudeau and found a true fighter to take us on.

Trump has said numerous times that he doesn’t give a frick who runs that country

How is it Trump's fault that Pierre is a fricking pussy and most Canadians are deranged libtards?
