Yeah - he wanted to win. Deserved a second term i/m/o. Got out messaged and out hustled by one of the best politicians in recent history: Bill Clinton. Had the bad fortune to run during a nasty recession and Perot split the Republican vote

Agree with all of this except to the extent that you imply that GHWB hustled to any extent.

Yep - In any rational world he should have been re-elected without ever having to get out of his house. However, Perot and the media hit him hard and he was not up to defending himself. Worst thing to ever happen. I will hate Perot until my last breath.

I forgot all about the grocery store and how he didn’t understand how it worked. Made Bush seem like a real elitist. Yes, that made it much easier to like a young Clinton who spoke with a down to earth southern accent from humble beginnings in Hope, Arkansas....although he was really from the town next to Hope but Hope sounded better. Politicians gonna politic.

Clinton was better looking and women put him in the WH. That’s the complete story.

And that really will be the lasting legacy of the Bush dynasty. They took class and decorum to a fault. I'm not sure if Trump learned from the mistakes of the Bushes or if it's just some childhood chip on his shoulder but you have to answer every lie and every slur. You cannot let a corrupt and incompetent MSM frame the conversation. Though in Papa Bush' day it was still a matter of media bias rather than the full-blown fifth column propaganda machine that seeks our destruction today.

I’ll never understand why the looking at his watch was such an issue. He wanted to see the time? Or just an automatic thing that people who regularly wear a watch do.

American voters are so damn stupid

It reinforced the image of him as a disinterested aristocrat who was annoyed at having to campaign.

But in hindsight I think it's another hint at the personal animosity between he and Perot. I'd really like to hear the real story on that.

After 12 years in office (8 Reagan) and coming off of his win in Iraq, the Republicans were lazy and over confident about having to face a slimy Governor from Arkansas.

The Democrats had no desire to run anyone of merit, Tsongas, Harkin, Jerry Brown and Clinton were a crap field, although they would look like statements in today's Democrat Party.

Shinerfan speaks a lot of truth. Didn’t quote his post from page 1 on why he lost but I feel the same way.

He lost because of raising taxes not understanding the new way to reach voters and basically people vote out incumbent party every 12 years

90’s was a huge change in the electorate and Perot factor causing Bush votes didn’t help. Bush played by rules set before Clinton used all forms of media

This^. Trump is a street brawler and probably the most media savy President we have had in awhile. if you attack him, he will hit back twice as hard and isn't afraid to get in the gutter and brawl. Look at how he emasculated and crushed Jeb.

Bush was too patrician, mannered, and upper-class to do that.....not necessarily the best traits for winning in politics.

This is about as good a take as fat arse Michael Moore saying Trump didn't really want to win.

Ross Perot had one objective, and that was to cost Bush that election. He succeeded

Perot was a thinned skinned little man with a short guy complex, I couldn't stand him although I agreed with much of what he said.

Everything I have heard and read is that Bush didn't take it personally with Clinton. They became good friends later in life but he damn sure was pissed and hated Perot.
