Seems like ran one of the worst campaigns in modern memory. That picture of him looking at his watch during the town hall debate was so awful.

Bush Sr. was either the head of the deep state or at the very highest levels. So if he lost it was because he lost the support of the deep state network under him

Yeah - he wanted to win. Deserved a second term i/m/o. Got out messaged and out hustled by one of the best politicians in recent history: Bill Clinton. Had the bad fortune to run during a nasty recession and Perot split the Republican vote

Downvote away, but the 1992 election reminds me of 2016 in some ways

HW bush thought he deserved to win and ignored key problems Americans cared about and were worrying about

Buchanan’s surprise showing in the primary was an omen for bush (like Bernie for HRC)

Bill Clinton was like Trump...outsider who appealed to broad group of voters

Bush 92 had the same “ra ra everything is great” strategy of HRC

Why he got killed among working class

There was also rumor that he had health issues during the campaign. Culminated after he threw up on the Japanese minister at a state dinner in ‘92.

No. He was there to hold the reins after Reagan so that Clinton could come in and take over.

He looked unbeatable coming out of the first Gulf War and when the Dem's big hitters stayed on the bench it was easy to not take a deeply flawed Bill Clinton seriously enough. Then he underestimated Perot and the many strains of conservative voters who are uneasy Republicans at best. No one really saw him as a bad President, it was more that the time of the Cold Warrior had passed.

He lost only because of H Ross Perot collecting what was I think 15% of the votes.

Everybody else here is wrong.

Ross Perot took away way more Bush votes than Clinton votes. This is the main reason why he lost.

I watched that campaign with horror. Perot splitting the anti-socialist vote and GHWB was reticent to call it out. I decided he was just tired of the whole mess and bailed out. Heart wasn't in it. Unwilling to fight back against the typical left wing assault.

Perot drew from Bush and Clinton equally. A poor economy and “Read My Lips” did Bush in.

Agree with all of this except to the extent that you imply that GHWB hustled to any extent.

At the time most people thought he didn’t really want to win.

He also visited a grocery store and had no idea how a checkout line worked.

not a chance in hell that is true - but that is the narrative that the MSM pushed. Perot and Clinton were in a conspiracy - all you have to do is look at Perot's actions. When it looked like Clinton was going to win going away, he dropped out of the race. But later, when Bush began to close the gap, he jumped back in. His ONLY mission was to defeat Bush. period.

A poor economy

was a one cycle 'technical' recession that Clinton described as the 'worst economy in 50 years' - presumable worse than Carter's disaster. The 'recession' was over in the summer, but was not reported until after the election - and Clinton claimed credit for it because people 'knew' he was going to be elected.

“Read My Lips” did Bush in.

In other words, the DEMOCRATs pilloried him for doing what they wanted him to do.
He compromised with them, then they reneged on their part of the deal (as they do each and every time the GOP tries to be 'bi-partisan') and THEN blamed him for doing what they wanted him to do - Only in DEMOCRAT mindless ideological fairy land can that type of mentality survive.

But yeah - GHWB didn't have the heart to combat all the bullshite. He gave up.

That is a lie - brought to you by the Main Stream Media and their cohorts the DEMOCRAT party.

He was being shown a state-of-the-art conveyor system that NOBODY had seen before.
