This is settled law, a sitting US President can NOT be charged with a crime.
I don't think it is settled law, unless there is a SCOTUS case I am unaware of. It's just DOJ policy, not law.

I think it is Nixon v. Fitzgerald. Absolute immunity from civil suits. No immunity for criminal. But didn't all that get shook up a bit under Clinton?

Generally speaking that isn't true. Federal agents in general are given quite a bit of lattitude in deciding whether a lie should be charged or not.
When I was a CID investigator it always amazed me that innocent people would lie to investigators almost as much as guilty people did. Sometimes those lies negatively affected my investigation and then I charged them and sometimes they didn't , and I would not.
Lying to a federal agent just isn't a good idea though.

I don't think Trump would have even ran for the Presidency if he was involved in some of the things that are alleged. Most criminals like to stay out of the spotlight. Surely a man with as many dealings as he has all over the world would know that he would be put under the microscope.

This is why the best policy is always, 100% of the time, to exercise your right to remain silent.

Got it. In such a hotly charged atmosphere, I doubt they could let it slide in the case of Trump and his family. But I have never investigated or prosecuted, so I guess I'd defer.

My lawyer wife says this is a ploy by the DNC to get Trump and Associates into civil depositions, where they would be compelled to answer any myriad of questions under oath.

Well, he wouldn't have immunity for acts that occurred before he became president, right? So maybe she is on the money.

I thought somebody was proposing a theory that the Mueller investigation was going to be a disaster for the Dems?
That Trump actually encouraged it, because he was clean, but it opened the door to hunting down "Russian collusion" with no cost spared... and that the trail would lead to the Clinton Foundation?
Funny that we're beginning to hear some defensive rumblings from the Dems now. I think they realize they might have made a mistake unleashing the FBI.

What you really mean is that since they know they got jack shite, they want to stretch the story out to the mid-terms and selectively leak.
Other than 3 advisers pleading guilty and one campaign manager indicted. Other than that, yes, nothing.

On completely unrelated charges

Can you imagine if Obama had 4 advisers charged with something? frick yall would be jacking off to it.
Hell, the right is all worked up about a republican who served under obama being investigated.
