Delaware State Police have identified the trooper who was killed in a shooting at a DMV facility in New Castle County on Tuesday afternoon.
Corporal Grade One Matthew T. “Ty” Snook, 34, of Hockessin, Delaware, was “a dedicated 10-year veteran of the Delaware State Police,” officials said Wednesday afternoon.
He is survived by his wife and their one-year-old daughter.
State police said in a statement that Snook was known as “a dependable, professional, and committed trooper.”
“A native Delawarean, Ty was a graduate of Saint Mark’s High School and the University of Maryland, where he was a member of the wrestling team. He was a respected colleague, a trusted partner, and a beloved member of both the Delaware State Police and the community he served,” the statement continued.
The shooting happened around 2 p.m. Tuesday at the DMV facility on Hessler Boulevard in Minquadale.
Police say a 44-year-old suspect entered the DMV as a customer.
A short time later, authorities say the suspect approached Snook as he was sitting at the reception desk and shot him. Snook was there working an overtime shift.
After being shot, police say Snook pushed a DMV employee out of harm’s way as the suspect shot him again. A New Castle County police officer then confronted, shot and killed the gunman.

On December 23, 2025, 44-year-old black male Avery Young entered the Delaware DMV on Hessler Boulevard in Wilmington and walked up to the reception desk where Delaware State Police Corporal Matthew T. "Ty" Snook was working an overtime shift.
Young opened fire point-blank, shooting the 34-year-old white trooper. Despite being hit, Snook heroically pushed a civilian DMV employee out of the way before Young shot him again. Snook, a 10-year veteran, husband, and father to a one-year-old daughter, died at the hospital.
Responding officers, including a New Castle County policeman, confronted Young and fatally shot him. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
This happened in a posted gun-free zone, despite Delaware's strict gun laws.
Reports indicate Avery Young had a lengthy criminal history, though full details remain limited in official releases as of December 25.
Mainstream media has largely downplayed the story and has not released Young's mugshot, unlike in cases with reversed racial dynamics.
Prayers for Trooper Snook's family and gratitude for his sacrifice.

You realize that Democrats have dominated Delaware politics for decades, right?
Its the state that kept re-electing Joe Biden for 36 years and hasn't had a Republican governor since 1993. But somehow its Trump's fault that Delaware's local prosecutors and judges kept letting someone out of jail.

Are you under the impression that a lot of red states are letting people out over and over again with things like cashless bail and/or raising money for their bail?
That doesn't happen in my parish with a republican DA.
The only judge who used to do that was a racist black judge who had a history of shady dealings, including requesting political favors for his son, who was criminally charged.
