Agree with another poster...free market solutions are ideal, but America has been getting stiffed by every other country the last quarter century. We should tariff everything and cut income taxes like the founders wanted.

Enough to remain in continuous operation. Steel is vital.

Well then the tariffs should be rolled back because they were making money and expanding before the tariffs.
What should we do about American companies that make products for export that are having to pay more for steel because of our protectionism of the politically powerful steel makers???

Those steel taxes on all Americans are there for political reasons and those reasons are PA,OH,WI and MI. Next year when all the candidates are working those primaries they will be falling all over themselves promising to raise the tax on Americans buying steel even more.
Hey... Just purchased a new washing machine. Spent less than 500 for brand new one. It will last 10-12 years. That's less than 50 per year.

A more interesting topic that is more relevant in our current climate: the origins and basis of Russian collusion narrative.
Granted on that topic, you wish to keep your head in the sand. Smells of fear.

Yes it is. You will know, eventually, if you care about crimes.

Here is what the former CEO of Microsoft said about chini and their great concern for IP protection....
Once again, most Americans are far more concerned about IP theft than they are a few bucks for chinese crap.
As for the steel industry, you need therapy IB, you have some sort of fixation on Wilbur Ross that is just not healthy. Back in the days of Carnegie we had 90% of the world steel market, govt policy fixed that for us, and you want to rid the country entirely of the industry.

90% of Chinese companies were using Windows, but only 1% were paying for it. This piracy, he said, was costing Microsoft $10 billion or more in profit.

Guess what---there are fewer IP protection laws in China. How much do you want to pay for Chinese goods and inputs so MSFT will have IP protection in China???
Just curious. This is nothing new. It has nothing to do with steel tariffs which tax Americans on imported steel from ALL countries.

Wrong---you have some kind of love for the grifter that is irrational and is harming America.
It is complete BS that Nucor was suffering prior to the tariffs. They were then a profitable company that was expanding.
You just support ALL AMERICANS having to pay more for steel and aluminum because you support Ross and his friends.
quote:

This is so much BS---you shouldn't even post. What are you even talking about?
We may at one time have lead the world in steel production because our economy and population was growing so much faster and was so far more advanced than the rest of the worlds----so what. We don't grow like that anymore---our population is not growing like it was in 1900 in terms of percent growth.
Steel is commodity that even the most primitive economies can easily manufacture if they decide too. It is not rocket science and the investment to build a steel mill is not significant relatively speaking.
It is like saying let's tariff sand or salt or water for "national security interest".
You support the president invoking "national security interest" 232 tariffs for political purposes and I do not. How does one prove "national security interest"?
The steel industry was not in danger of disappearing. It was relatively healthy.
Those whiners have had protectionist tariffs on and off again for 100 years. The story is always the same too---they go up in price on Americans making US made downstream products containing steel less competitive on world markets hurting those companies and forcing them to move production to countries where steel is cheaper, they give themselves big raises out of the profits, they pay out huge dividends or buy back stock instead of preserving cash, recession comes they go bankrupt and whine again.
USX and Nucor BTW have increased dividends and/or announced large stock buy backs since the latest protectionist tariffs were put in place----I guess that is in the national interest.
If you going to invoke "national interest" to give them outsized profits then at least force them to invest ALL their profits in new manufacturing and cap their prices. You want the government giving them artificially high profits I do not.

The democratic party said this from about the late 60's through the mid 80's and then they joined the Reagan era worship of free markets. Labor has been all in on protectionism forever. It is very gratifying to see that many in the GOP have forgotten Reagan for the shyster he was on this subject and returned to protecting US workers and US Interests. Also lays to rest the lie that taxes hurt the economy...tariffs are a consumer tax and no one balks at paying them....the GOP is almost completely the Democratic party of the 60's and 70's...complete with the white racists from the south! How long before the "conservatives" leave the current manifestation of the GOP and give it to the protectionists? There ain't no room at the inn for libertarians and fiscal conservatives in the GOP no more....thank goodness!!!

Free trade is a good idea on paper. So long as you are dealing with like minded nations, it can work. This is NOT the case with China. They are not our friends and are looking to take the USA down. It's ok to think outside the box..... IB90Proff just can't wrap their minds around it
Paper is the only place an idea as simple as free trade can exist.....it has never existed in the real world on any scale other than small niche economies.
China is proof positive that a brutal collective can and will outproduce a capitalist based economy over time because the power of the state is unlimited in China whereas in a capitalist economy it is not. Couple this with the fact that China is free to export shite all over the world without any security costs and it is a perfect storm for communism to out produce capitalism.
The world has not known a free market since the end of WW2....because the United States has served as the mall cop of the world keeping markets viable, shipping relatively risk free and securing investments. We have taken money from US companies and workers and handed it their competition via defense spending. Then we stare in wonder when we have difficulty competing. It is truly staggering that we do not recognize this...the rest of the world certainly does!

Damn skippy! Keynes has been proven correct....
Cutting taxes, increasing spending and placing tariifs on imports....that is a recipe for re-election EVERY day of the week and twice on Sunday. Its a shame that y'all weren't on this kick back when Reagan started the entire "free market" craze....but Tip O'neil would be proud of the way DJT has lead the GOP to the promised land.

The Coalition for a Prosperous America was started by Nucor and tariffs on steel have allowed them to raise their prices on American customers and pocket billions in profits on relatively small increases in steel production. Stand with those politically powerful proponents of protectionist tariffs and their democrat friend Ross and Navarro if you like. I will stand with Americans.
Nucor is a damn fine corporate partner....and if they need some protection to level the playing field so be it....there is nothing like looking after Americans first. I did not and will not vote for DJT because I will never accept the whole white nationalist bent of Trump and company...even though I know it is all about pissing off the left and attracting support from a segment of the right that normally isn't politically active....there ain't no ideology in it....but DJT instincts on protecting US Workers and Manufactures at any cost is SPOT ON. We have experimented with the entire "free market" debacle even though our actions created subsidies for our competition therefore eliminating the opportunity for any free markets...it has been a disaster just as the labor movement and the left of the early 70's and Tip Oneil told us it would be....the middle class has been devastated...we've gone from single income families to double income families and from little personal debt to staggering personal debt because wages haven't gone up since we go seduced by the attractions of the free market. Those days are gone now, for at least some period of time...and it is all thanks to DJT....
