I'm thinking that as well. The news breaking about Brix, whom people seem to genuinely like, lashing out internally with frustration about it may have struck a nerve.
At least one thing is clear, the CDC needs a massive overhaul after this. Whether intentional or not, they have absolutely botched the statistics on this one. The reality is we will never know how bad it really was.

Almost 400K tests today, which is a new high by almost 50K. The % positive rate for today is 4.5% for 17.6K positive results.

Altogether, NYC alone had 445 deaths over the last 3 days of updates, but Worldometer added 296 for New York in total. I suspect that they are missing up to 592 deaths (445 plus the 147 subtracted) due to NYC alone.

I think our mental model is flawed on this - the OG Tuesday spike on April 7th quickly became a late week spike the last few cycles.
For new cases, the reported peaks (however much accuracy you ascribe to any of these datasets) since April 10th were, April 17th (Friday), April 24th (Friday), May 1st (Friday) and May 7th/8th (Thursday/Friday).
Good news - we're now into new case numbers we haven't seen since late March.
