Google has "massaged" the saying on behalf of the bloodthirsty left in recent years so include these dumb soda jerk theories. The term is, and has always been used, to indicate killing something, either figuratively or technically. Its origins are believed to be either from the military or from organized crime.

Look at who is voting for her. Half this thread is two posters performing mental gymnastics to tell you what you are seeing isn't real.

This is the same political party that termed the coin "dog whistling", basically stating that anything the enemy says is a call to violence or racism.

It is frightening to watch so many Americans openly calling for, then justifying, killing fellow Americans over political disagreements. Then, after they kill you, they literally dance in the street.

Bentley, a Columbia University professor, confirmed the soda-counter usage of 86 in an article in the journal American Speech, “Linguistic Concoctions of the Soda Jerker.” Bentley sent his students out to drug-store soda counters around New York. There were many code numbers in the eighties and nineties:

81: Glass of water; also root beer.
82: Two glasses of water.

89: A celebrity walked in;
95: Customer walking out without paying.

Comey used the expression "8647" on Instagram on May 15, 2025. There are several uses of the term 86 that predate Comey's use of 86 by several years. These examples prove that 86 is a restaurant industry term, and that its common parlance does not mean to kill someone.


In May 2018, the term was used by the restaurant staff evening shift on a white board message to the morning shift referencing Sarah Huckabee Sanders after she was asked to leave:
