Its amazing how western culture is the root of all evil... yet when countries move away from it situations like in Afghanistan and Iran are what happen... every.single.time.
Sad to see the results of woke liberalism and the masses just letting this happen in our universities and school systems since the 1960's...

I'd suggest reading Guest of the Ayatollah by Mark Bowden. It details the Iran Hostage crisis and goes into a good bit of detail about Iran prior to those days and leading up to it. Great book and especially timely now, given the fact it feels like we're reliving the 70's all over again.

Upside down world. We brought Osama Bin Laden to power supporting him in Afghanistan in the Russian war. They couldn't fix Afg and they are next door. Taliban seem to be some fearless hombres. I hope their interest lie only in Afg and not outside. Hope their main goal is not imperialism in the area. That could be drawn out forever.

If you think the vast majority of people in Afghanistan lived like this, you're delusional.
This is in Kabul, not representative of most Afghanis or the way they lived back then. The situation for most Afghanis was much more the way that it is under the Taliban outside of city areas.

There's actually a part of me that thinks all of these guys that are still alive from that time frame must REALLY envy today's crop of "journalists" that do not even have to pretend any more like they sort of tried to do.

But the reason that Westernization stopped is that their people saw what was happening to the United States, and said "Eff That, that's not happening in OUR country". And I really don't blame them. As much as I despise the Mullahs in Iran and the Arab World, I really can't blame them for not wanting their children to become what OUR children have become.
