It's a video graphic, so not sure it can be posted. Below is the Twitter link
Foreign Born Population in the US yearly from 1850-2019.
Spoiler: It starts with our population of foreigners being mostly from Ireland, Germany and the UK, to it being mostly from Mexico, India and China.

One thing that’s changed, it’s much easier for a Mexican to come the the United States, and much less expensive, than it was for a German in the 1850s.
That changes who comes, and explains why Mexican immigrants are so often lower class, and quite poor.
You do or course see Middle class immigrants to, but the ratio is different.

What changed in the 1960s that sparked the huge rise in Mexican immigration?

The termination of the Bracero program?
That’s my guess.
That’s my guess.

The European upper class in Mexico actively encourages the native underclass to leave. It's an apartheid system that is never addressed.
The ruling class of Mexico criticizes the United States for making it hard for them to offload their poor onto us.
Imagine if we were mass-exporting poor blacks to Canada, in the millions. And then you had our president chastising Canada for being against it and, in fact, not welcoming more and making it easier.

The Irish and Italian waves were quite poor, but neither got to 2 million foreign born here at one time (and that had more to do with specific US policies versus ease of the people to get here -- especially for Italians), while the Mexicans have blown past 10 million.

We need to control immigration for may reasons, but we should be thankful it is coming from Mexico. They are all Christian, and generally hardworking. GOP needs to figure out a strategy to appeal to more of them.

The Mexicans also don’t have to cross an ocean and have a major political party actively trying to make it easier to come here to harvest their votes and indoctrinate their children who are born as citizens.

The ones who legally come here are by and large fine people in my experience. Ones who come here illegally are both mostly hardworking and Christian you’re probably right but they’re not going to vote against their own self-interest. Pandering to them is useless, target their children since they’ll be citizens anyway.

LBJ and the Hart-Celler act. Before then there were ratios in place that favored immigration from Western Europe and put heavy restrictions on the rest of the world.
Edit: To be more specific there were ratios in place that were tied to nationality.
LBJ was unequivocally a gigantic piece of shite.

I don't necessarily disagree. I think there is probably a sweet spot somewhere in there for generational assimilation. I think one could argue we hit that spot for both the Irish and Italian waves. I don't know if we have gone too far for the Mexicans.

You can thank Ted Kennedy for the Mexican invasion

I don’t want to overstate it, but the poor Irish neighborhoods in the Boston area are ethnic ghettos, and with multi generational poverty.
There is something called the founders effect though, where even small groups of settlers can determine the culture for generations, even as waves of new immigrants come in.
Too many immigrants though, and they do stop assimilating, and simply perpetuate their own culture.
Virginia is a good example of that. The native culture is dying out because of mass migration from other states.

They started noticing the post-war rise in standard of living. Maybe TV had something to do with it.
