Plenty of oil here, no reason to get it elsewhere. Now I would agree if you said the MIC needs a fresh source of taxpayer money, but for that, they'll resort to uranium enrichment.

We indeed do export some oil but we are in no way NET exporters. US daily consumption of oil is about 20MM BBL/D and daily US production is about 12MM BBL/D. Energy independence is primarily a meaningless term and also a myth.

If our reserves are "untapped, saved" that means they aren't being produced and barrels are being removed from the market, which result is that the price of oil begins to climb, which means that the cheap oil you see today (due to US supply) would no longer be available for purchase in the future.
