The attitude was much more stoic from our WWI vets. The interviews with survivors just before they died of old age all went the same:
'Yeah, we got gassed a lot and food in the trenches was kinda scarce and I did lose my left leg. But it wasn't so bad.'

I would be scared beyond all ability to function if I was ever required to go into battle but I suspect men like the Lt. Colonel in the OP are a different breed.
