Colin Kaepernick comparing the NFL Combine to the slave trade may be one of the dumbest comparisons ever dragged onto a television screen.

Slaves were kidnapped, sold as property, beaten, separated from their families and forced to work without pay or the freedom to leave. NFL prospects voluntarily compete for jobs that can pay millions of dollars. They have agents, contracts, union representation and the legal right to walk away. But apparently putting on shorts, undergoing a physical examination and running the forty-yard dash is now the Middle Passage. What historically illiterate nonsense.

Then Kaepernick delivers this supposed revelation: The NFL expects players to “do what you’re told,” show up properly and perform well—and those who do will be paid well.

Brilliant observation, Professor. You have just described having a job.

Every working American is expected to arrive on time, follow reasonable instructions and perform the work for which he is being paid. Doctors follow hospital rules. Pilots follow flight procedures. Factory employees follow safety requirements. Football players follow coaches and game plans. Perform well and you are rewarded; refuse to do the job and there are consequences. That isn’t slavery. It is employment.

The Combine may be invasive and parts of it may deserve reform. But evaluating the physical ability of someone applying for a job based almost entirely on physical ability is not exactly mysterious.

Kaepernick is free to criticize the NFL. But comparing voluntarily pursuing a multimillion-dollar career to human bondage is not courageous or profound. It is melodramatic, insulting and breathtakingly stupid. It trivializes the suffering of actual slaves merely so a wealthy former athlete can portray ordinary workplace expectations as oppression.

NFL players are employees, not property. Contracts are not chains. Coaches are not slave masters. And being expected to do the job you voluntarily accepted is not slavery.

It takes an extraordinary combination of privilege, arrogance and historical ignorance to confuse the two.
