Your kid can’t read and do math, but they get free breakfast. That’s all that matters.

it kind of does. kids should be able to eat. it's not their fault if their parents can't make that happen

I mean, do we think the kids are really going to learn math whole starving?

It's a shite situation. But saying frick the kids isn't exactly the best way to reach them.

In fact, it's a large part of the reason the country dislikes the politics favored on here.

Low IQ people latch on to the word “free”.

If they just said that the State provides breakfast and lunch for all public school students, the approval number increase immediately.

You’re completely right on substance though. The kids literally have to be there by law. Feeding them isn’t some affront to society

This. Although there’s a reason Colorado’s public schools are different than Louisiana’s. But we aren’t allowed to talk about it. It’s not skin color, either.

of all the things i could bitch about - and there are many - spending money on providing breakfast and lunch to kids in public schools has to be at the bottom of that list

In my utopia kids should want for nothing and all kids would have every resource they want/need. Medically, educationally, nutritionally and recreationally.
BUT
At 18 it all (or 99% of it at least) gets cut off.

My suspicion is that this tax get passed under the auspices of “food for kids” because who can deny hungry kids??? but then rapidly gets used for other things that have nothing to do with kids and everything to do with enriching the political class.

100% agree. If anything, the majority of public schools systems have enormously misallocated funds. They got some federal grant to put up tech around the school or renovate a building, yet the kids themselves are never addressed.

Plenty of fat to be cut in education and the way DOE spews cash. No argument whatsoever. But just feeding children who are required to be there…..ain’t that. We can argue about curriculum later.

I have no doubt this is the case. But those things are separate line items. It’s on the voters and elected representatives of any given jurisdiction to ensure the money goes where it’s supposed to.

If schools are spending dedicated lunch money on flat screens and conferences in Florida, call the FBI.

Maybe someday people will understand that using government to take the resources of another human is just theft and they are using the government to break the commandments.

Good, making sure the bellies of literal children are fed should be the bare minimum of societies obligation to them. Yes, ideally parents should provide for them, but for a multitude of reasons it doesn’t always happen. I didn’t have parents capable of taking care of us, and I remember very well what it’s like to go hungry at school. This should be implemented nationwide.

Why does every student need to have free meals-- So the kids who do need them don't feel singled out?

Just give every kid a preloaded card, have parents put lunch money on it. None of the students would know who was getting free meals.

we're the wealthiest society ever. we should be able to feed kids who need help
sidebar one of my alabama buddies sweet talked his kid's school lunch lady into hooking him up with the square pizzas. said they're as good as we all would remember
