I’m still confused as to why we have that many folks ver there. My assumption is that there was a shitload of money to be made and few who thought they could help poor people.
Id have to be guaranteed easily more than a million to go over there during “peace” time.

processing times at HKIA and the final destination have overloaded the current system.
Basically the place we're dropping them off can't hold any more people at the moment.
Plus several of our C-17s are out of commission until they get "decontaminated"

I think this is the case. They just updated the story on air (no link) that no planes have taken off since the original report.

The people who are there are from a variety of NGO's, Aid Workers, Technicians supporting the rebuilding of the country, teachers, etc...
When you have been in a country for 20 years doing nation-building, a lot of folks are needed, not just those in the military or diplomatic corps.
They didn't get out because the US didn't expect them to have to get out so quickly. The admin thought they had months. So the people were just following the direction they'd been given. When the Taliban took over the country in a weekend, everyone was caught flat footed.
Thats why they are still there.
