It's more protecting consumers and our advanced economy. I don't want to devolve our economy and let other countries approach us. Not for lower level manufacturing that isn't even needed. It's just irrational. It makes no sense under scrutiny and the defense ends up just being talking points or changed arguments (national defense primarily).
But yes after the Covid spending from 2020 onwards, inflation is a concern now too.

Use the example in the video of the auto industry. You don’t think that is a win-win for the USA? Place the same tariffs on them as they do to us?
He even said that you will probably collect tariffs and prices for certain items will go up in the short term. But as sales slow, they will come back to negotiate. Then prices for their items go back down.
When those prices do go up, there are American made options that will not have the same price increase.

Other governments are used to the US walking in with a position that is already favorable to them. They aren’t used to or comfortable with the way Trump negotiates (I.e. like a businessman). NATO is a perfect example. People that followed Trump knew he would never actually pull out of NATO, he just wanted to stop subsidizing countries like Germany. Everyone in the media was screaming, but at the end of the day he got NATO members to cough up more money. He treats it like a business, which is what this country desperately needs.

No, they are not, unless you consider people like Milton Friedman, Thomas Sowell, Fredrickvon Hayek, etc to be “just fricking dumb.”
However, what that CBNC guest says is a lot different from what Trump has/and is saying.
It’s one thing to use tarrifs as a negotiating tool in order to get other tarrifs lowered. I doubt any of the above economists would disagree.
The issue is that is not what Trump has said. Trump has said he wants to impose a 10-20% on ALL imports, regardless of trade status. He has also said he wants to use the revenue from tarrifs to replace the income tax, which is mathematically impossible. Tariffs like this are just fricking dumb.
