Sounds like we are about to add some jobs to the US.

Obviously China would prefer to continue their current trade relationship with us, but it takes 2 to tango.

Then they need to sit down and discuss tariffs if that is the case. Right?

China did the only thing that could have a major impact on the U.S. in one felled swoop and that was restrict the import of recyclables from the U.S. This happened way before any tariff talks / Trump even being elected and it has practically killed the recycling markets in the U.S.

Now, whether you view that as good or bad is up to you.

So what? The sheer numbers makes this a no win for them. They import almost nothing from us, and we are their largest customer. They don't need to worry about replacing what they buy from us, they need to worry about selling their crap to someone else

I'm not making it out to be a huge deal. It's just a fact that they are sensing that this will escalate further and are preparing for it.

One of China's prominent internal think tanks just posted a paper last week they they were not prepared for a trade suicide with a customer with a 500 billion deficit in goods.

Their currency has devalued by 5% to combat credit concerns and their stock market has still declined by 20%.

Their concern is not importing goods from the US, its LOSING exports to the US. Thats the quirky little problem when you have raped your trade "partner" for decades.

Right, we can all agree that China isn't a good actor in all of this.

The debatable point is how we deal with it.

You can deal with it thru strategic trade alliances, or thru escalating rhetoric. We've chosen the latter so we'll see how it works out. Fingers crossed that it works out.

Good.

We’ll buy plastic crap from another Asian country.

We can easily find a producer.

China won’t be able to find a purchaser so easily.

So the way you NOT make a huge deal out of it is to start a thread about it??

Everyone should be looking for other trade partners and punishing China for their environmental disasters alone.

Frick China and their polluting arses.

Yeah, sorry if I start a thread on a Politics board about trade policy.

Maybe we should just stick to threads about John Legend and Rachel Maddow, right?

While true, politics plays a bigger role than economics here.

Jinping is not willing to take the political hit that would accompany loosing a trade war to Trump. He’s more than willing to scramble for smaller market alternatives to the US before he ‘bends the knee’ to a foreign power. He’s just not going to capitulate when he is right on the verge of locking in a virtual dictatorship. He just needs to get to 2020 when the chinese citizen score citizen goes into full effect and he’ll be able to swiftly crush any political dissent. Until then, his only objective is avoiding the look of weakness.

If y’all are banking on Jinping giving in, you’re going to be sorely disappointed. Just remember that we warned you when prices start to escalate.

Personally, I prefer the direct, go in dry approach and make it hurt... Frick all that beating around the bushes... China has been frickin us for a LONG time...

I think the problem is that the perception is that you and others like you only are interested in talking about trade policies when your guy isn't in power.

Make sense? I'm not saying it's accurate but that it is the perception.

Another thing to consider is the Soybean tariff.

President Xi is there for life. If this soybean tariff keeps escalating, it could effect Trump supporters in swing states. It could hurt Xi too, but he's willing to have his people suffer. Will soybean farmers stick in there with Trump?

I didn't say this thread isn't appropriate to this board.

What's silly is you then trying to walk it back by claiming you're not making a big deal out of it.

Own it, turd blossom....

The US already has 6.7 million open jobs (June estimate). Sounds like prices are about to rise.

The crazy thing is that the economy is rolling, now this trade war flamed by tariffs might derail it.

Why did you capitalize soybean? It's not a proper bean....
