China vs USA: A Tale of Two Economies

The chart is provided by the South China Morning Post. SCMP directly acts as a propaganda outlet for the government. A great example would be a journalist for them quit in 2018 over the following:

quote:

Post became a willing participant in a grotesque propaganda ploy to discredit the detained bookseller Gui Minhai, who was kidnapped and held because of his activities selling books in Hong Kong that embarrassed the Chinese leadership

Hong Kong Free Press

In short, do you research a bit before you tout a chart as being accurate. Beijing is known for being as clear as the Mississippi river on their economics.

IP theft,

In China, yes. Should you pay more for goods because Procter and Gamble does not have the trademark protection in China they do in the USA?? I hate that they don't and I would encourage them to not do business there until they do but I should not be punished in some misguided effort to get that protection for them.

Nope. Not in the USTR 301 investigation that Trump has to stick to

Nope. Not in the USTR either unless you have something more specific.

Nope. Not in the investigation.

strengthening American manufacturing

Not really---only one of the points mentioned in the 301 investigation deals with this.

protecting domestic economy

Not a lot--almost all of the 301 investigation deals with Chinese policies in China.

It would help you in your arguments with me to read the 301 investigation on the USTR website. It is free and you could, I think, read it in less time than you have spent posting about trade out of ignorance.

Sorry---selling to those people.

Why you want the President to punish Americans with tariffs and businesses with government threats and engage in a trade war that includes retaliatory actions that are crashing our farm economy, holding back our LNG business and threatening our American companies that sell into China is beyond me.

It’s pretty simple. China’s theft of IP, manipulation of currency is a small part of its goal of world domination in manufacturing. They steal and manipulate in order to make other countries reduce or discontinue manufacturing so they will hold the world hostage as one of the few manufacturers left on the planet. It’s a long term game with China and they are counting on the short sighted like you to let them get away with it.

I am curious Dawson have you examined the USD/CNY value variances over the last 5 years versus the USD/Euro value variance over the same period.

No I didn’t get the joke. I’ve never used that phrase. You totally avoided the question. You must not like the answer.

Because your question to me concerning Trump Jr is impossible for me to answer. I have to assume if the Trump organization is having products made in China they’re feeling the effects of the Trump imposed tariffs like any other importer is.

I have examined closely the way China values imports and exports and manipulates the value for trade gain. They are master manipulators and the tariffs make it much harder for them to hide value and manipulate the products that come to market.

Has anyone that thinks currency manipulation is something unique to China examined the USD/CNY variances over the last five years to the USD/EUR variances???

Will facts matter to you if I show you?

Then you might as well advocate for a trade war with the the EU too.

Over the last five years the difference between the value of dollars in CNY have varied from the lowest CNY value of 6.11 CNY to the highest CNY value of 7.09 CNY. A total of .98 CNY between the two or 13.8% of the current value.

The EURO on the other hand has traded between a low of $1.03 USD per Euro and a high of $1.34 USD per Euro. A range of 23%.

So as you can see the activities of central banks and the supply and demand of currencies have created more volatility in the EURO/USD relationship than it has the CNY/USD relationship.

One can say the Chinese manipulate their currency somewhat but they must admit we do also and the EU does too. Demand for currencies depend on a lot of things. The decline in the value of the CNY can be attributed to traders attititude toward Trump's trade and the activity of their central bank. Every day Trump's wants our central bank to intervene and lower interest rates---an action that one could say is currency manipulation too.

Trump has greatly exaggerated Chinese currency manipulation and there is no way an impartial onlooker (the WTO??) will call the variances in the value of the CNY the last five years currency manipulation any more they could call the US a currency manipulators.

Surely you can admit Trump is prone to great exaggeration. You don't have to call him a liar.

That’s not what I asked.

Does trumps “order” also apply to his own companies currently being run by his son? He has two options, be a hypocrite or stop making his products in China.

Considering Trump just made that declaration I guess we don’t know the answer to your inquiry yet. I do agree if Trump is strongly urging US companies to pullout of China and move their supply chains elsewhere or find alternative suppliers from friendly countries then Trump should also cease all business dealings with China
