China accused the United States on Thursday of interfering in its internal affairs and said it had lodged a complaint after U.S. President Donald Trump signed into law an act laying the groundwork for possible U.S. navy visits to self-ruled Taiwan.
Tensions have risen in recent days after a senior Chinese diplomat threatened China would invade Taiwan if any U.S. warships made port visits to the island which China claims as its own territory. On Monday, Chinese jets carried out "island encirclement patrols" around Taiwan, with state media showing pictures of bombers with cruise missiles slung under their wings as they carried out the exercise.
On Tuesday, Trump signed into law the National Defense Authorization Act for the 2018 fiscal year, which authorizes the possibility of mutual visits by navy vessels between Taiwan and the United States.

Its always hard to wrap my head around these dual claims of ownership you see around the world. Especially when only one entity is in control of its governing.
It’s clearly not Chinese territory if it’s independently governed and China has no military presence there. They act like it’s our hawaii but doesn’t even seem like our phillipines / Puerto Rico
I understand them being against the US establishing a military relationship in their area, like we did with Cuba/Russia in the Cold War. But claiming it’s theirs just doesn’t make sense to me
I’m sure someone knows more than me though

I thought the Chinese were smarter than this. Wait until the Navy ships leave, then attack.

Is this in response to their island building and fortifying though? Or is that supposed to be in response to us and it’s a chicken or the egg type deal

No you dont. And we would be absolutely incapable of intervening in a meaningful way.

Then the world watches as Taiwan kicks China's arse.

Oh really. Please share with us what the SecDef has discussed with you in relation to this.

I've spent a lot of time on all 11 of Taiwan's AFBs. They have a very disciplined Air Force and some true bad arse fighter pilots.
Taiwan would be able to hold off a China attack for about 3 hours.

I’m not saying we could for sure, especially in an actual all out war. But we do have more carriers out there than they have in their entire fleet.
We would have to contend with their Air Force but could form a successful naval blockade nontheless. If they are willing to risk all out war and start hitting our nuclear carriers over Taiwan then I guess it’s WWIII
A couple hundred F18s, 4-6 BMD destroyers with SM2 and 3s, and subs off their coast ready to do some real damage if things get really serious. It’s a reason for pause at least, and more formidable than attacking any non world powers mainland

I joke about it because I don't think we'll endanger Taiwan like that. At least I hope we don't put Taiwan in a position to be destroyed by China based on our actions.

I have serious concerns about our readiness for a conflict against a capable foe in the Pacific (or anywhere).
Ask yourself this: when was the last time the United States executed a war effort against an established power with an advantage in active combat forces?
People would be crying in the streets by week 2. Our populace has no capability to cope with the casualties we would face.
