I bet all of that stuff can easily be made here.
I'm not in manufacturing so i don't know how long it takes to build all the factories and install and calibrate all the machinery necessary to do that, but I feel safe with the answer, "Not in the short term it can't."
Not to mention, I don't know you saw it upthread, but it's not just medical supplies and equipment we get from China. We also get the factory machinery to do things like make medical equipment from China.
So the factories to make the actual medical equipment would literally have to wait on us to build and tool and die factories to make the factory equipment necessary to make the medical equipment.
Not only that, but we also import heavy construction equipment like excavators and wheel loaders from China.
So long term we'd have to start making those too if we wanted to all of a sudden build a bunch of factories to make all of this stuff that China currently makes.
So that's MORE factories we'd have to make before we could make the construction equipment so that we could build the factories to make the factory equipment so that we could build and equip the factories to make the medical equipment.
And FINALLY, even if we spent 10 years doing all of that, we'd never be able to do it for anywhere near the cost that they do.
The average Chinese factory worker makes around $6.75 an hour.
The average American factory worker makes around $17 an hour.
So even if we did all of that we'd be paying between 1 1/2 and 2 times what we pay for that stuff now.
Much better to just pay the tariffs Trump is imposing on the American people and keep importing Chinese stuff if those are the only choices.
Populists seemingly never stop to do the math.

We just gotta remind them that we are perfectly capable of repeating August 1945 if they really wanna play.

The Chinese government is evil, oppressive, and deserves much of the blame for the COVID epidemic. They should be paying us reparations.
That said, messing with China is big leagues. Better hope Trump and team play this right.

Trump’s aggression has huge risks.
However, a $37T Nat'l Debt sure as hell carries huge risks.

We need a giant asteroid to go ahead and smack earth. Mother needs a reset. Humans can’t save themselves from themselves.

China doesn’t have any military experience. Need to do a first strike, just go all out and wipe them out with the quickness before they even figure out they’re being attacked.
I wouldn’t want to face them once they get some military experience (eg taking Taiwan)

China has competitors that make many of those things that would LOVE to take the US market from them.. countries friendlier to us
We have options..

Hope we can manufacture drones 100% with US parts or them having no battlefield experience is neutralized

I miss the old days when China would call Americans "running dogs imperialists."

This is only going to help Made In The USA.
Plus…China can’t feed their population. They are going to starve their people again.

If Truman hadn’t been such a giant pussy we wouldn’t be dealing with those little bastards today. Should have nuked them to the stone ages.

quote:And exactly why we are weaker. We farmed out production to other countries, like China, to satisfy our consumer addiction. All of those things can be produced here. Ford has plants in Mexico. Taiwan is biggest producer of semiconductors. Apple, and American company, makes their phones in China. All comes down to cheap labor.
We don't just buy crap from China. We buy agricultural products, computers, lithium-ion batteries, smartphones, nuclear reactors, boilers and other expensive large machinery, lots and lots and lots of stuff made from plastic (which can be anything from a cheap child's toy to a high-end piece of biomedical equipment—we import A LOT of medical equipment from China), video game consoles (although I don't consider that loss a negative—I think having fewer of those would probably raise the collective IQ of the country by 5 points).
That being said, China has a big problem feeding it's population. A small cut to food imports there, is a big arse problem for them.
