William Cogswell, a former GOP State Rep, defeated incumbent Democrat Mayor John Tecklenburg in today’s runoff election by less than 1,000 votes.

Shocked by this. Charleston has become a truly awful place filled with hipster douchebags and Yankee liberals.

Wow. Congrats on the win!

ETA: someone want to explain the downvoting of celebrating getting a Republican mayor for the first time in 150 years?

Damn right we did.

The tide is turning.

Even the transients and blacks see the error of the librard ways.

The Charleston area is very conservative overall, but in the city limits, for mayor, is a mix of hoity toity liberals, young dumb college kids, and cultcha. The fact a republican mayor got elected there is a very good sign.

It's the most overrated and overpriced city in America. The only group of people more arrogant and obnoxious about where they live are people in Manhattan. I'd rather spend a weekend in Kingstree or Manning with actual South Carolinians.

Damn SCL

But now you're mixing "Old Charlestonian" arrogance with "Yankee infusions" which tend to make Old Charlestonians more "arrogant"

I am amazed by RE prices in the area though.

The only thing Kingstree is known for is the prison but Manning is fun. Used to love taking the boat out to Goat Island.

One of my best friends of 45 years works for CBS Channel 2 News in Charleston. He predicted this a few weeks ago. The Dem mayor told his police department in 2020 to ‘Stand down” when BLM, antifa and other gangs busted up shops and looted stores in the ritzy Kings Road shopping district…think Saks 5th Avenue, Gucci, Louis Vuitton, etc. It’s a liberal city in a red state but he thinks that hurt him.

I’d imagine they’re like the Nola transplants who are suddenly the authority on all things Nola after living there for 6 months. By the time I moved from uptown my neighbors were from DC, LA, Ohio, etc.
