Do we have any evidence that he worked in/around disease research labs? For all we know he worked a desk and never stepped foot near anything that could infect him.

He's worked in areas where certain diseases are prevalent but there's little to no evidence that he actually worked around any disease at the CDC. Epidemiologists work with statistics, patterns, causes and prevention.
