The study points to climate change and rising temperatures adversely affecting childhood obesity, as children spend less time exercising outdoors.
Seems logical that kids north of the Mason Dixon line (approximately) would spend more time outside playing since temps stay warm longer. They don’t have many days when it’s too cold to go outside.

They have video games.
Back in my day we played outside in the summer, after school, and even after football practice.
The best video game we had was pong on a black & white tv.
Rode our bikes everywhere.
Did get in trouble in middle school for hosting a jello wrestling events in a kiddie pool.
The girls in the neighborhood were on board and it was entertaining.
My mother came home and called all our parents.
The whole thing about being young is we played outside, rode our bikes, exercised by playing sports, and had fun.

I basically wrote that sketch on a WebMD forum. It was pretty funny at the time, because there were a lot of discussions about different weight loss strategies on WebMD. There was an entire weight loss forum on the site, along with things like exercise, healthy eating, etc.
Ultimately, it spread like wildfire, because no one was advocating for common sense solutions. Everyone was trying to find the magic "way of eating" or some pill. They didn't want to acknowledge that at the end of the day, it comes down to will power. Just don't eat so damn much, and get a little exercise.

There are many TED Talks on food. This one was an eye-opener.
Thanks for sharing this link. I haven't been a big fan of TED talks for a long time, but this is a good one from 2011 and is only 18 minutes. Glad I watched it.
The presenter has a background as a financial analyst and starts applying her analytical skills to the US food industry after her child has an allergic reaction at breakfast.
This talk includes slides with data on US allergy rates, cancer rates, and other discussion on subsidized agribusiness versus organic farming versus local farming.
It's all about the money.

Yeah...I'm leaning more towards McDonald's and Liters of Cola and less towards "the Sun" (Norm voice) for the change in obesity.

this isn’t unique to you. I was born in 91, and we did all of that and then some. we didn’t have a computer in the house until I was in junior high. Gateway POS. the box kicked arse though. what’s happening now is incredibly unique. Hiadt concludes is the kids who were given iphones before middle school

Great sport. I'm sure it includes running as well.
Encourage him to eat healthy, but don't go crazy on the cutting weight thing. My $0.02

High Fructose Corn Syrup vs sugar myth is just that.
Its akin to saying...cookies dont make you fat cake does.
I remember the ole Johnny Carson joke "scientists have discovered that milk will kill you, they tested it in lab mice and found if you feed a mouse eight gallons of milk a day it will explode..and die".

I would have guessed AC and video games. When I was a kid during the summers we played outside from breakfast to dinner, drinking water but not very often. Played backyard baseball all day. When fall football practice came along (2 a days) we were ready. Tired but ready.

This. Let’s say it’s actually on average a few degrees hotter than when I grew up in the 70s-80s. That means I still ran around all summer long in 90 plus degree weather. An extra few degrees isn’t forcing kids inside.
I remember the fat kids at school - a couple of twin boys - who would be considered way normal nowadays.
Ridiculously high calorie meals and worthless sodas along with screen time is what has led to today’s fatties.

Going to have to call bullshite on this one. HFCS does more damage to the liver and creates a more inflammatory environment in the body. Sugar has always been with us in various forms, but HFCS has to be made in a lab. It doesn't take a statistician to see a direct correlation with HFCS and overconsumption.

Appreciate the advice...
He does eat healthy, and no way we would make him cut weight. His club coach actually advises against it..
