- The post accurately reports Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney's January 25, 2026, statement denying any free trade agreement plans with China, directly responding to U.S. President Trump's threat of 100% tariffs on Canadian goods.
- Background: The tension stems from Canada's recent deal allowing nearly 50,000 Chinese electric vehicles into the market at low tariffs, which Trump views as undermining U.S. trade protections under the USMCA.
- Implications: This development underscores shifting North American trade dynamics, where U.S. pressure may limit Canada's deepening economic ties with China and BRICS nations amid global EV supply chain rivalries.

To put some context around these discussions, you need to understand carbon credits and the green policies of these countries like Canada, but there are many more.

Specifically, China’s automaker BYD and the carbon credits it provides .

Check this out: (excerpt)

quote:

A brand new BYD costs around $5,000 to $10,000 USD, in some places even less.

Then later I noticed even more of these BYD cars in Europe. I started to pay attention to them and saw them everywhere. When I went back into Russia a year later in 2025, there was a very noticeable increase in BYD cars. It was crazy, they were everywhere. My travels also took me to southeast Asia and again those damned BYD’s were all over the place. In Thailand, Philippines, Malaysia, Vietnam, these BYD’s were everywhere, maybe even 30% of total vehicle traffic at times – most certainly well over 50% of all EVs – and there are digital billboards for “Build Your Dream” (BYD) all over the place throughout Asia.

Australia is stocked full of those things, and the middle east, yup, even there too. It became increasingly weird to notice. So many were visible I was wondering how the heck China can mass produce and ship this many cheap EVs so fast.

……..

China produces the BYD not to make money from the automobile, but rather to sell the carbon credits the automobile generates within the auto industry.

The actual value to Beijing is in selling the carbon credit worthiness to various automakers who are fined or penalized by their government for producing gasoline powered vehicles.

BYD is, in essence, not a car per se’, but a mechanism to generate a carbon credit certificate that can be sold to other car companies. It’s the carbon credit certificate that generates the revenue, not the sale of the vehicle.

Elon thinks BYD are building cars. They aren’t.

I am in agreement with the administration that we cant let the Chinese destroy our domestic auto market.

That said we 100% have to be able to get our domestic companies to start turning out affordable and reliable ICE vehicles again.

Im talking Camry sized sedans, hatchbacks, smaller trucks and entry level SUVs with bulletproof 4cyl engines that get 35mpg and cost in the $10-15k range.

We're killing our middle class by forcing them to take car loans for 72 months to be able to afford budget vehicles.

Toyota has 4cyl engines they cant use due to CAFE and emission standards that would be dirt cheap to produce and last 250k miles.

GM has V6 engines that my grandma used to drive (3800 comes to mind) that you could slap in a ranger size truck or 90's era blazer sized SUV and churn out in the 15-20k range that were also absolutely bulletproof and would be cheap as hell to produce.

A Chevy Colorado starts at $32k. Thats ridiculous for what you're getting and much of it is downstream of stupid emission equipment making basic cars more expensive.

If we don't want China to own our market tariffs can help. But we have to do better from a domestic offering standpoint to be able to compete with what China is offering and while things like Toyota bringing their overseas entry level trucks to the US is a great start (Im told no one over 5'8 can really comfortably sit in it unfortunately) its going to take the government assuring the companies they can make cheap vehicles without getting crushed via CAFE because I do feel for them that they were forced to go electric by the Biden administration and now that entire investment is basically wasted.

That’s been the plan that Trudeau has implemented for many years. Unfortunately, Canada failed to understand the language in the USMCA agreement, courtesy of Mr. Lighthizer in Trump’s first term.

Unless Canada capitulates and comes to the negotiating table in good faith, they will reap the economic whirlwind. And that means Canada will need to jettison its carbon credit BS before a bilateral trade agreement can be successful reached.

China already controls Vancouver and a substantial portion of BC …. now they want the rest.

For $5k with a warranty?

Compared to $35k for a tesla, $32k for a chevy volt or $28k for a kia?

They would wreck shop on the entry level market even if they only last 50k miles or something.
