Tell that to the many thousands of soldiers that lost their lives storming the beaches in order to defeat Japan.

I haven’t had a problem with anything that has happened so far, but just in general if we keep going tit for tat. Has a conflict ever been won from the air without nukes?

What’s the long game here

After reading this statement I realized that a 40 yo person, maybe even up to 45 yo, probably have little to no real knowledge of the Gulf War. I bring Desert Storm up because we decimated the Iraqi Army with constant and precise air strikes. Hell, they were surrendering to news crews. Makes me think if we would do the same to Iran, if it came down to it. Which I don't think will happen or want to happen.

Well, forget the nukes in Japan. Curtis LeMay killed WAY more Japanese through MASSIVE firebombing of Tokyo and over 60 other Japanese cities than both nukes combined.

I know that's not the point of your OP question, which is a good one. Just had to point that out for ya.

If the OBJECTIVE is to completely neuter and neutralize Iran's ability to do anything but rebuild itself, with no resources, and destroy their entire infrastructure and render them absolutely helpless, then YES, YES, YES, this particular conflict can easily be wrapped up in the air without "boots on the ground." As long as we don't go in to occupy, do regime change (we frick them up bad enough from the air, the Iranian people will regime change for themselves in their own way) or "rebuild," then this can be an easy victory, should it ever come down to it.

You're under the impression that the only reason we made Japan capitulate was two nukes in 1945?

We could completely decimate Iran’s infrastructure back to the 1600’s without ever setting foot on their soil. It we typically don’t do that.

Trump is making it clear that he's not the 'typical' US President they have been accustomed to. That's a good thing. They need to be hit back or they'll just keep on killing us.

If we torch their infrastructure slowly, there's a very good chance that the people will overthrow the government before we have to torch it all.

And lets not forget, the Ayatollah ordered that strike. That makes him a legitimate target.

A good starting strategy for Iran would be to not shoot down passenger airplanes.

I might be giving him too much credit but I assumed he was referring to Midway and carpet bombing.

It doesn’t really matter though because any explanation of USA military dominance that doesn’t include logistics is insufficient.

We did a lot of that during the first Gulf War. Seemed to be pretty effective.

Then why was there a second gulf war?

Hopefully, to do whatever we need to do in order to bring our soldiers home and let the people who want that shite-hole fight over it.

We still used ground troops to push the Iraqis out of Kuwait. But we half-assed it and stopped once Kuwait was liberated. We should have gone all the way to Baghdad and dictated terms to Saddam in ‘91. We probably don’t go back into Iraq 12 years later if we had simply finished the job in Desert Storm.

Limited war is gay.

You can destroy/subdue an enemy from the air. You can’t seize and hold territory and you can’t nation build.

If there absolutely must be a war I hope it’s an air campaign on Irani military and nuclear facilities and a coordinated commando/air strike campaign on Quds forces worldwide.

don’t want to define it. I guess the point is... what is the best possible outcome from only an air campaign.
