There was an article back in the late 1990s that reported the PEW Research survey of Ivy League Journalism students. The survey made news because it was the first time the majority of journalism students said there reason for going into journalism was to change the world.
Previous survey responses by the journalism students had been to report truths, find truths, expose truths, etc.
So the problem we are seeing today is the results of those journalism students who believed their role is to change the world being the people running the media and teaching the new journalist.

If they were competent, in the sense that they actually pursued truth and facts, Biden would not be president. In fact he wouldn't have been vice president either because Obama would never been elected had he been subjected to even the most cursory vetting by the press. Hell Obama wouldn't have even been elected to the Senate given the Illinois frickery involved to get him elected to that seat. Joe would be a footnote, a career senator from a small state, known for plagiarism, boorishness, and getting his arse handed to him by Clarence Thomas.
