Sooner or later someone is going to run out of people.
Ukraine press gangs are nabbing men off the streets. Women are hopelessly trying to stop it.

Thanks.
The Korean War resulted in very minor changes to the existing border which reflected slight gains for both sides.
The 1973 Paris Peace Accords did not require North Vietnamese forces already in South Vietnam to withdraw. They required the withdrawal of U.S. and other foreign troops, while allowing North Vietnamese forces to remain in the South.
I GUESS that might be a similar situation with maybe the same result...the Russians violating the treaty to take the rest of Ukraine.

You have obviously put a great deal of thought into this. Are you convinced that we HAVE a consistent geostrategic policy?

Yes. When one or both leaders take a dirt nap.

Yup. I think things will take their inevitable course.

The only way this will end is Putin dies.

Russia just needs to pack their shite and go home. This isn’t the 1920s-40s anymore. Ukraine doesn’t want to be a part of Russia and why should Russia even care that much if they even do? Russia can live without Ukraine. They’ve completely ruined their own country by starting this senseless war. Any future Russia potentially had is over.

Putin can. He can withdraw to the pre-war boundaries and declare victory, and he will be ok because he is so insulated.
This would be funny to watch happen.
"My people, we've ceased hostilities with mighty Ukraine. After a tremendous amount of spent blood and treasure, we've decided to withdraw to our pre-war borders and return the occupied territories. Rest assured, they know we mean business, so they'll act right from here on out."

They are very close to provoking NATO to join in.
That's been paradoxical to me. He's winning against Ukraine, but it's a struggle win. Meanwhile, he keeps poking at NATO trying to draw them in but it seems he wants them to enter the fray only in some way in which he can portray them as the aggressor.

So...what's the diplomatic solution...point that out to them?

It was started at the top & can be ended that way. The people have no say in the matter.

But is he?
He has gained some territory sure. Not much or any lately, but overall he has.
Look at the cost. Look too that his enemy is far from finished. Ukraine still can mount an offense, still strike inside Russia, and isn’t surrendering.
Technically he’s winning, but like Robert E Lee after Chancellorsville, what had he really won so far.

Yes.
Don't get me wrong, Ukraine is bleeding Russia, but Russia is slowly eroding Ukraine territory. Russia has the resources in both manpower and arms to keep this slow grind going for the foreseeable future, while Ukraine is completely dependent on the West for their resistance (which is essentially a very slow retreat).
The only real options I can see Ukraine has in getting their territory back is for the Russians to revolt or for something to happen to draw NATO fully into the fray, otherwise Z will have to give up land (and quite a bit of it) in order to end the war.

No they should give it back but that the reason for war, Putin wants to keep land captured and wants more land and Ukraine let them keep Crimea and other area but that’s isn’t enough for Putin.

Right. So what's the diplomatic solution?
I don't think there is one in the near future.

Let Russia keep land they annexed prewar and give back land captured during war, maybe that would be win win for both
Posted on 9/25/26 at 2:03 pm to IvoryBillMatt
No. What Russia and Ukraine won are fundamentally odds with settling this diplomatically. The only diplomatic settlement I can think of is creating Novorossiya and transferring all the eastern Ukraine to this new country. As long as they speak Russian in a Russian affiliated, the Russians may accept it. We would have to force Ukraine to accept it. Without this, I don’t see how you stop the fighting.

Not this month, not this summer. Ukraine had made slight gains overall.
Russia can’t win until the war is over. Ukraine will still be causing lots of Russian casualties, bombing Russian refineries, messing up their economy and bleeding them out.
Being ahead in a war isn’t winning. Ask Germany, ask Japan. As long as Ukraine is fighting Russia hasn’t won anything.

Thanks. That's the most sensible diplomatic solution I have heard.

The rub is can anyone guaranteed that Russia will abide by a treaty? Would there be a DMZ? If so who would police it?
